My CEL was on and I tried doing something to fix the problem. Now the light is off, but my OBD2 scanner is still reading the code. Does that mean I fixed it and now I should erase the code, or does it mean I wrecked the light?

the ECM will store the code until it is cleared. the light SHOUD also stay on. you probably killed the light (if you tried to disco the light behind the dash)

get a known good bulb and put it in the check engine light socket, or fix any wires you coulda messed with. Reset the PCM also.

BTW, what code did you throw ?

I had a p0402 (excessive EGR flow). I really don't won't to spend $250 to get a new EGR valve from Autozone, so I was looking to see if there was any carbon in the valve that I could clean out.

In between the time I took out the valve and the time I put it back in, I killed my door chime (http://www.msprotege.com/forum/showthread.php?t=43417). When I removed the wire, the metal head actually got jammed in the white plug. I figured that wouldn't hurt anything since it would be an open circuit, so I didn't worry about it.

How do I reset the PCM?

disconnect the neg side of the battery, also, when you turn the key to ON but the engine is off, does the light go on?

I forgot about checking that - it doesn't come on.

All right, something weird just happened today: I haven't had time to check out what's wrong with the CEL yet because I've been busy fixing other stuff. Today I was hooking up the illumination light for my tach; I had the ignition in the "on" position while I was checking for a place to put the wire, and, lo and behold, the CEL comes on! The only thing is, after I finished with my tach, I put my key in the "on" position again, and now once again the CEL won't come on! Does that mean the bulb could be loose?

Does anybody know which wire on the instrument panel harness leads to the CEL for a '99?
