What does your local dealer charge for Mazda keyless entry remotes?
My Mazda dealer wants $99 a piece plus $35 for programming for each of my cars (MS Protege, 98 Millenia).
I'm curious to see what other dealerships are charging for new remotes and programming.
I'm done with ebay because the listings show new remotes, and 3 out of 3 times I've won - I end up with junk that doesn't work and won't program. First one was superglued together and cracked. Can't check the battery if you can't even open it. Second one was completely corroded inside from water and didn't work. The 3rd one only 1 button worked and it looked like someone tried to superglue the circuit board pieces back together. Each one was advertised as new, or like new and they obviously weren't anywhere close to that. The Keyles Ride site is run by one of those same lying ebay sellers, so thats off the list too.
What does your local dealership charge? I bet there's some that want even more than what mine is charging.

The local Mazda dealership quoted me $65/per, but I didn't ask for programming costs. $35/car for programming sounds about right (in whatever context "right" is, when dealing with a dealership), as that should be 1/2-hour labor charge, which is usually the minimum labor charge billing in their invoice system. Then again, it'll take them 5 minutes, so fair is in the eye of the beholder.
I'm surprised (and sorry) that you've had so much bad luck when dealing with sellers on eBay, in relations to fobs. I've not had a bad fob yet. I bought 4 fobs for my '96 Camry on eBay (bought the car used, that came with no fobs), and 2 fobs for my wife's '03 PT Cruiser (only came with 2, wanted 4 total), and all fobs I got from eBay worked great. I just closed a deal for 3 fobs for my '03.5 MSP, the car only came with 1 fob/key. I paid something like $39 for all three, shipping included, which sure beat $65/per + tax locally. I don't really care if it's "new", but working and reasonably clean sure would be nice. :)
BTW, if you happen to find out how to program the fobs, let us know. I'm going to have to find this out anyway, when the 3 fobs show up this week. Thanks!

Thanks for the reply. I knew the price seemed a little high. I'll check around some more and see if I can find any better deals. It was pretty disappointing with ebay that the deal seemed so great but all 3 turned out to be bogus.

Has anyone actually gotten this to work?

The drivers side door switch is that little button in the door seam. You know the little button in your refrigerator that turns out the light when the door closes - same thing.

I'll try this again during lunch, now that I know what the "driver-side door switch" is! :)
The one thing I don't like, after reading these instructions, is my impression that the keyless entry system is limited to 3 fobs. I find this suprising, as my previous '96 Camry and current '03 PT Cruiser (wife's) could both take 4 fobs. And the '03 PT Cruiser can take 8 encoded keys.
I'll try 4, and can live with 3, but I'd still like 4...

Now that I know which switch is the "driver-side door switch", the instructions worked like a charm. And I can confirm that the keyless entry system will only take 3 fobs... when you get to the fourth, nothing will happen, until you press one of the first 3 (to close out the programming loop).

You didn't save me $35, as I never would have paid it. I have too many contacts in the auto-repair industry, I would have found it out sooner or later (and shared it here). You saved the other guy $35. :)
Hey, what can I say? I tried 4 remotes, each time I programmed the fobs. I had to go through 2 programming cycles, to test all 4 remotes, and tried programming 4 remotes each time. Once you program the third remote in, no remote will do anything except one of the 3 programmed.
I can learn to live with 3 remotes, but doesn't mean I have to like it. :)
Thanks for your help!

I got my remote from ThePartsYouNeed.com in the mail today. 5 days isn't bad especially when one was a Sunday.
Programming was easy, took about 10 seconds. I can't believe a dealership would charge 1/2 hour of labor for a 10 second job. Thats a good way to lose customers.
Anyhow, the remote works great and when I went to put in an order for remote for the Millenia I noticed I got free shipping, so I bought a 2nd remote for the Protege and a pair for the Millenia. FINALLY, I will have remotes that work and that I can use.

Yeah, the instructions were basically the same. I got them without the diagrams and whatnot, but it was this:
Step 1: Open driver side door and leave open.
Step 2: Lock and Unlock the drivers door using the power door lock
switch on the door
Step 3: Insert key into the ignition.
Step 4: Turn Key to ON position and return to Lock (off) position. Do
this 3 times within 10 seconds. LEAVE key in the ignition in Lock (off)
position.
Step 5: Close and open the drivers door 3 times. Leave door open after
this step
Step 6: ECU should respond by locking and unlocking the doors once.
Step 7: Press any button on remote #1 twice. ECU responds by locking
and unlocking the car doors.
Step 8: Additional remotes, repeat Step 7 for up to 3 remotes total.
Step 9: Remove the key from the ignition and the ECU will respond a
final time with a series (about 4) of door locks and unlocks.

With patience, you should have to pay more then $10-$15/per, depending on age, popularity, etc. I paid just under $10, when I ordered 3.

Hey, dealerships are a business, and their business model requires a 1/2-hour billing minimum, even if it takes 1 minute. They'll charge you 1/2-hour, or comp it. If you do a lot of business there, they'll comp it. If not, they'll charge you at least minimum. I don't like it, so I just don't use it. If I can't find this info on the 'net, I'm not the geek I proclaim to be. :)

I got a notification today that one of those ebay sellers was suspended (probably for the same issue with other people). I'm doubt there is any recourse to get my money back, but at least nobody else gets burned. I found something else odd out today too. On another forum, somebody mentioned that they had pretty badly limited range with their remote, but if they aimed the remote at their chin, they could get the car to lock and unlock from about 80 ft away.
I tried it when I was headed back to my car from the mall today, and it works...lol. Probably will get brain cancer now...but it about triples the range.

Not sure...but it doesn't seem to make a difference in range if I just point the remote backwards. I guess the remotes aren't directional, they probably just send a wave of signal out in each direction.
The Millenia remotes came in last week. I just got around to programming them today. I got myself a bit confused programming the 2nd remote to the Protege, but I was skipping ahead and not programming both together instead of one at a time.
Now I have 4 new remotes, and with the few hundred $ I saved, I can buy more toys for the car.

When I got My MSP a bit over a week ago, it came with two keys, two fobs. One fob was much newer than the other, but both work just fine. How many is a MSP supposed to come with? Now if I run through the programming steps with the two fobs I have, those will be the only two fobs that work for my car? Just trying to make sure I don't have a third or fourth fob out there that could potentially open my car...Thanks.

The MSP will take 3 fobs. The instructions say that, and I tried 4, and I only got 3.
When programming fobs, it's an all-or-nothing thing. If you want to "add" fob, you have to start from scratch, so you must also program in any "old" fobs. If you have 2, and want 3, you must program in all 3 at that time.

What is the numbers on the back of the remote say?Reason why I asked I have 2 extra remotes that would sell to you...

no, depending on the shape, and would it fit on my ES? What improvement would it give?

Thats a good question I'M GOING TO MY BUDDY MAZDAMIKE. As far shape it's in I rated it 3 1/2 out of 5 star.

Resurrecting this thread... :) Just wondering, if you do this to two Proteges at the same time, in sequence, in theory... you could have one remote operate two cars correct? Not sure why you would want to do that but hell it would be cool to try.
Other than that, I have a spare remote I tried to program and it would not work. It did work on my original one though so I think this extra remote that came with the car when I bought it is either the wrong model (?) or is just bad because I even swapped the batteries and my old one still worked but could never get the new one to attach to the ECU.

I have a 04' mazda 6 and im having the same sort of issue. all of a suddon i was trying to unlock my trunk and it stopped working. so ive tried the steps and when i get to the last step of pressing the keyless entry button and taking the key out the ECU is supposed to open and lock 4 times. It only does it two times and then the keyless still doesnt work.
anyone have any suggestions?

Okay, here's an oddball question for anyone reading...
What if you purchase a slightly 'off' transmitter? My GF's got an '00 Protege that we're touching up, and I snagged a second transmitter from Ebay for $8. When it got here, it wasn't as advertised (so I'll send it back if it doesn't work) but.. it's for an '02 Protege. I suppose I can give it a shot and see what happens.. Any feedback in advance would be useful, though.
Thanks!
D.

Dammit.
Well, if anyone has an '02 Protege they need a keyless remote for, I've got one for sale - because it won't work for our '00 protege. :(
I confirmed that the battery's good (swapped it with the battery in my gf's remote on her keychain) and it's no joy.
MAKE SURE YOU BUY THE RIGHT PART!
D.
*edit* the programming instructions worked like a charm to re-program the older remote, though!

Anyone have a spare, for a 2000 Protege, that they' dlike to unload? I have now found out that only ONE of our remote keyless units works.. the other one's fried. :(

I just had to do this. I have a TT installed (and the two wires cut to arm the alarm while the timer runs). The car refused to go into programming mode until I reconnected the blue wire at the keyless module under the rear deck. Thought I'd share in case someone out there still runs the stock alarm... :)

Thanks for helping me figure out why I can't program mine, I knew the turbo timer may have had something to do with it.

I dont have any pics but just fold down the back seats, remove the clips for the rear deck and pull up on it and there is a white box with a harness plugged into it. There is blue wire with i believe a white or silver stripe that i had to reconnect, this wire lets you lock the car when its running. I like having working remotes now.

Does anyone have schematic of the stock MSP alarm system , would like to get it uninstalled and install new aftermarket , just in case so it won't interfere with new alarm.
I bought a 2003 mazdaspeed protege, no key fob with it when i got it, tried the instruction on programing and it worked. so how do i find out what number i need on the key fob?

What do you mean what number on the key fob? You said you programmed the key fob and it worked?
I tried the programing, I have no fob, just made sure I could do it. Is there a certain number I need for the my car? On the fob that is.

Trace it as far as you can to make sure, then check the orange wire in the alarm harness under the dash.
