Crosspost from M3F...
I brought my car to TEIN this week for, what they said was to take measurements and specs for future kits. I assumed they'd measure it up, then give me a call back when they had a prototype to fit up.
Anyway, when i went to pick it up yesterday, as i rounded the corner, i knew right away, they had put something on it, cause it was LOW. I'm like sweet, musta got some springs http://www.fmvperformance.com/forum_items/Smileys/default/icon_razz.gif
So i go in and come to find out, they lied...lol... they put on a coilover kit *does happy dance* i assumed it was the basic kit, but then he mentioned damper adjustability...holy shit, it's an SS kit!!! *bows down in appreciation*
Apperently, they had only ever fitted that kit to a HB, and wanted to be 100% sure it fit the sedan and verify the spring rates for the sedan. They said the weight difference of the HB was not enough to warrant a change in spring rate and the kit fit just fine.
I haven't played withthe adjustments or even know where the adjustments are set yet, TEIN is going to email me the specs they set it at soon. Guessing, i'd say about 1.8-2.0" up front and 1.5" out back. The height is set to still retain full suspension travel. Either way it looks GREAT!.
The ride is noticably and obviously stiffer than stock, but nowhere near as bad as i would have thought for being that low. The springs don't feel all that stiff and the dampening is awesome. At slower speeds, the stiffness is more apparent, but cruising on the freeway it's really smooth. I have only driven on them for a few hours, so this is just my initial impression.
I must give a BIG thank you to Johnathon at TEIN for being very professional and offering great customer service, despite the fact, i wasn't really even a customer persay. I was genuinely suprised i would even have anything installed on the car, let alone a high priced coilover kit.
I can't beleive the luck i've had with this car and test fittings...must just be my time, cause almost all my mods have been from test fit sessions and yes, all for free. Sure there's the inconvience of driving all over socal and bugging family and friends for rides, etc...but all in all, i think the monetary savings are worth the inconvience http://www.fmvperformance.com/forum_items/Smileys/default/icon_biggrin.gif I am THEE happiest dude on earth right now...and i'm at work right now, not even that is gonna bring me down http://www.fmvperformance.com/forum_items/Smileys/default/icon_razz.gif http://www.fmvperformance.com/forum_items/Smileys/default/icon_razz.gif http://www.fmvperformance.com/forum_items/Smileys/default/icon_razz.gif
Then when i was finished at TEIN, i drove right over to ARK for thier new SS exhaust system test fit...Friday was a good day!
I'll have some pics to post up tonight if i get home before dark, if not then Sunday.

Lucky you...I wish i lived near all these manufacturers...I would do the same if given the opportunity.
Hope they do you well!

for people worried about the stiffness and don't want too much of a drop, they can get the JDM SS's which lower less and have softer spring rates
people in the north can also buy the tein rust proofing spray shit.... I believe it's JDM only because I haven't seen it in the US catalog or the US site... I can import that shit if people want them
btw darryl, time to get the EFDC shit!

Ya, living in Socal close to most of these manufactures is a definet plus...but living in Socal in general it has it's downs...lol
Brian MP5T...those look like the Basic kit for the P5. I helped install those at an install party i had, good stuff (yippy)
The MZ3 kit looks similar for the front, but the rears are seperate springs/shocks.

the basic and SS's look the same actually... the adjustment as at the top of the shock piston AFAIK... SS's don't come with the pillowball mounts either
the basics are a USDM only line only... no market in japan... I have a feeling anyone who buys coil overs there just buys the good/real shit since everything costs a fortune there anyway

I got the specs today. (attn)
Spring Rates
6kg front (335lb)
7kg rear (391lb)
The general rule of thumb is you can go up our down 2kg without having to revalve.
2kg = 112lb
8kg = 447lb
9kg = 503lb
Adjustment Range
Front is -.9 to -2.3
Rear is -.4 to -1.6
(Recommended Front -1.7 Rear -1.1)
EDFC is compatable part # EDKU1-12120

Between your coilovers, your new exhaust and your SS, I would say that you got a pretty damn good deal on not paying for a thing.

I had a chance to autox my 3 this past Sunday. Only did 5 runs at the end of the day, but it was enough to get a feel for it.
All i did was adjust tire pressures, i did not change the damper settings. 36psi front and 38psi rear on stock 17" tires. I left the jack and spare in there too...not enough time to remove it before i ran.
The car did quite well, although i could definetely feel the weight of the car, compared to the others i was driving that day and especially compared to my preped Protege. I ran competetive times vs. other cars that were more preped and beat some of them too.
As the car sits, it's a STS classed car. The only suspenion mods are the SS coilovers. Engine mods are only the SRI and ARK exhaust (i guess you could add the short shifter too...but it's not much of a performance mod) It could use a harness, but the seats weren't all that bad. My biggest complaint is where my knee rests against the center console, i'd definetely need a kneepad. This would be greatly reduced with the use of a harness, but i think there'd still be enough pressure to require a kneepad.
Body roll was nice and tight, but with the crappy tires, the front wanted to slide, so i couldn't push it as hard as i would have liked. With some Azenis or V710's, it would have turned in faster times. The power was nice, pulled well out of the corners and had good power down the straights.
All in all, it could be a competitive car, but not a winner. Add in a sway bar kit, better tires and some weight loss and it would run with most STS cars. I was happy how it did. Since it's my daily driver, i am really going to have to work hard not to prep it anymore and be tempted to run it...lol
For a quick comparison, the fastest time i ran in a nicely preped Sentra SER was 58.2xx on sat morning, never having even walked the course. My fast time in the MZ3 was 58.8xx. Now this was after 2 days of running the same course, about 30-35 laps. So you can see, it can indeed be competitive.

Unless you plan to race it competitively, higher spring rates will just give you a rougher ride. I've only raced the car once, so i dunno what spring rates would be better.
A higher spring rate will reduce some body roll and depending on the front to rear rates will get the car to rotate. With most FWD cars, you'd want higher spring rates up front...but all the kits i've seen for the 3 have higher rates in the rear...i just don't have enough race time in the car (which is a good thing...i don't want to race it.....yet) to know what rates would be best for autox atleast. Although i do know that the Eibachs or similar rated springs would be way to soft. 350-400lbs would be my starting point if i were to set it up for race.

Also, with struts toe can change significatly under compression and rebound. With stiffer springs you're limiting the suspension travel and your toe won't change as much. You'll have an easier time setting up the car too. Also, with the reduced body roll you won't need as much negative camber statically.

This seems to be often overlooked, but the effective spring rate of the front springs usually stiffer than the rear. The rear springs, when measured by themselves will have a higher spring rate than the fronts, but once installed in the car, there is a mechanical advantage (lever) which changes the effective spring rate. The front springs are almost directly inline so the spring rate is more or less direct.

Exactly. Spring rate is not what you should pay attention to. Wheel rates should always be considered.
anyone know the price on that yet?
