View Full Version : Replace/Clean or Cap off the EGR Valve?

I have continued to look into the issues that our cars have with stalling. Ever since my FMIC, and BOV with recirc, i have had more stalling issues. I have read that cleaning the EGR helps with stalling, since it gets clogged with carbon build up. But since the bolts are made of Cheese that need to be removed so you can clean it, you may do more damage trying to clean it. Then you will have to replace it, which is over 150 bucks. This will be a ongoing problem since the valve will just get dirty again. So i'm thinking of possibly capping off the flange on the intake that the EGR mounts to. The only downside is worse emissions, but i live close to Detroit so no one will notice. I think it worth a shot, unless you guys can think of any other solutions to fix the Stalling.

Don't know why you are stalling if you are recirculating. If you are blowing into the atmosphere and recirculating with another valve, and still stalling.... then your BOV is too soft. Tighten the BOV. If you still have stalling, look for a leak in the system. A small hole or leak in your piping/vac lines will cause stalling. Look into that first.

i have the Dual port Turbosmart BOV, its set soft so that it can recirc easier. Once i make it harder, it backfires more and stalls more. Maybe i have to hook up my stock BPV. But then i have to get a nipple welded to my Hiboost piping to my turbo. Its so frustrating.

sounds like you have a leak somewhere. Dual valves are always better than a dual valve if you ask me... but look for leaks before welding a nipple on.

Could thin silicone hoses cause a problem? I got the factory Brake booster hose with the check valve in it $ 48.00. The majority of the other vac hoses are thin silicone. Do you think thicker stronger hoses be better?

Emissions aren't the only downside to removing your EGR valve, removing it in general is a horrible idea IMO. Every bad EGR valve that I have replaced was making the car idle horribly all the time or most of the time because it was stuck open/closed when it shouldn't be. I haven't heard of somebody who had their EGR go crazy only during shifts causing stalling.
PROS:
could possibly fix stalling between shifts
CONS:
raised cylinder temps
CEL
computer will probably go into some kind of limp safety mode = slower car
misfires when pulling big hills
Undesirable A/F ratios bc the burnt exhaust aren't in the cylinder like the computer wants them to be
Try it if you want to,but if anything, make what you do reversible incase it doesn't work out

Yes if your having stalling issues its not your egr. From what i have seen people have been having idle issues if it was the egr..

Zen nailed it. I wouldn't cap off the EGR since it actually it very beneficial, especially to our cars. Our cylinder temps are high as it is, and the EGR, although recirculating hot gases, those hot gases displace some charge and effectively dilute it and dop the cylinder temps. Of course, a lot of people argue that that is a bad thing for power, but I can tell you that it's a good thing for safety.
