I found what may be almost a spot on color for the pillars in our cars, i think this also pertains to all other proteges with gray pillars.
Krylon 3551 Classic Gray (you can get this at walmart)
I just used this on my single pillar pod and the tone is dead on. The only thing is that it has more of a gloss than stock pillar but you can always paint that also. Hope this helps out you guys who are trying to match the colors.

Have you seen those little sprayers you can buy at Home Depot for like $8?
It's like a glass bottle with an replaceable aerosol can attached to it. I randomly found it in the paint section. Also found chaulk board paint... I've wanted to use that on a car for years. :-D

heres it on my car as of 2 days ago. the reason it looks like the apillar is falling off (as well as the dave b rings) is because they are. when i wrecked my car everything sort of fell out of place. i just gotta snap it back in there.

or you can use the SEM light titanium dye that everyone else has used... and as a bonus its not a paint, its a dye, so it bonds to the plastic... I used it, still have 80% of the spray can, and you could rub all day and not make the color come off the pillar pod.
matches PERFECTLY

from everything i read that SEM paint is much better (since it wont scratch off) but i couldn't find it anywhere and was unwilling to wait to have it shipped. im too damn impatiant.

I originally had the idea about 5 years ago to do something with that. Yes, it's been done a number of times over the years. That doesn't mean it can't be done again. Most everything you can think of has been done in some form or another anyway.
Speaking of, I had a friend who tried to get a hold of Hotwheels in regard to that color changing paint they had years back. Temp. controlled color. I don't recall the price, but I think it was something like 100+ grand to do a car with what it costs. 8-)

How do you put the gauge pod in place? Glue, velcro,....

yes, thats the color and brand I used. mine pretty much stays in place... though I threw in some 3M double sided tape for good measure
.
just remember that the SEM "paint" is a dye, and you dont use primer... just make sure the part is clean, and shoot.

I'm in the process of spraying a pillar now with the SEM Light Titanium as suggested and from the first place linked right above. It's a bit lighter so far than the passenger side pillar, but I'm assuming it's because I've smoked in it. I'm going to try to clean the existing pillar using some stuff we used to remove nicotine from the furniture. Maybe that'll salvage it.

ditto. Plus, i like the contrast of the silver ring of the gauges against the black, it really sets it off. Heck, maybe i'll end up painting the passenger side black so they match, although that wouldn't make too much sense with the headliner and stuff.... i dunno
and, FWIW, i would think if you opened up the gauges to paint the needles that you'd set yourself up for all sorts of problems... moisture and fogging of the glass from the inside during different weather... cuz aren't they atmospherically sealed or whatever, to prevent that?? Unless theres a way to do that again....

my pillar is painted there in that pic. notice its sitting on a sack that has stray paint marks. the pillar comes black though, which some people dont paint to that it matches the dash better. i like the painted look better though.
but she said pillarS.... i would assume that means both of her non-pod pillars are black. Which is kinda weird.

I used some plastic rivets and drilled holes through the pillar and the metal on the inside of the door frame where the pillar goes down... looks pretty good actually

Has anyone tried to get this in a darker color and redo all the pillers. I think it would look pretty good, but just wondering if anyone has done it

3M Automotive Double-Sided Tape.
If it even needs it. Most full pillars will stay anyway due to fit and pressure.

that's a lot of work. you also would need to remove the seatbelts and such to fully paint all parts.
I've thought about it but have yet to have the $ to do it.

I used velcro on mine, so its easier to remove later if i need to do anything with it. Seems to be working fine so far.
