Ok, I did some serching and didnt realy find just a solid answer. What would be better for drivability, and good performance? Ok, right now I just have a filter at the MAF. Would it be better to A: put the stock box back on and use a K&N drop in filter, or B: spend the money on a CAI? I will have the Hiboost FMIC this winter if that makes any difference. For mods I have a catless dp, and DSM AFC running about 8-9 psi.

thanks,
Ian

w/o a venting bov you will get a massive turkey noise w/ the injen. jus something to consider.

btw im pretty positive you will need a aftermarket intake w/ Hiboost's FMIC b/c of the cold pipe routing.

Oh, yea, I forgot about that. Hmmm, that may have answered my question then.

You only get a loud turkey under hard acceleration. Its not a problem at all. I say get the Injen. But the stock box with a K&N will be almost as effective. I have absolutely no driveability issues with my CAI. There's a thread somewhere by the Texas MSP crowd that shows the effectiveness of the Injen with testing. There is no doubt in my mind that it helped the performance, especially in the upper RPM range. Don't have a dyno sheet to prove that, but I noticed smoother acceleration and picked up more top speed on the highway.

so if i end up getting a FMIC i will have to get rid of the stock box and get a new CAI? or is that just for Hiboost's? mad bills geeezze  what about a better SMIC?

Stock Box is alot cheaper...

i cannot say how it is for other FMIC but i'm 99% sure hiboost needs aftermarket intake. Others may be compatible w/ stock airboxes but i dunno which one are for sure. I know Ion's can be used w/ stock airbox, MAM comes w/ their own intake w/ the fmic kit, Perrin i believe also works w/ stock airbox.

search around and you'll see.

my turbo hoses smic works great with my stock box, and I dont think CAI are worth the money for the gains.

i think youll need to use the injen with the fmic. you maybe be able to convert it to a sri. you will gain hp with a better intake.

stock intake=better midrange
injen/aem=better topend

the stock intake with a K&N drop-in filter is fine. A few members, myself included, have chopped the side of the airbox for "better" airflow. No noticable gain in power, maybe a lil in spool time though. An intake is NOT worth $270 IMO. I'd rather use that money for a track fee.

Well at higher boost and it works very well and as fas as cost goes by it used like I did :)
I saw one on here with filter for 75$!

On a naturally aperated car you are right, on a turbo car you want as little restriction as possible to gain low end power by spooling the turbo faster. There is a noticable reduction in spool time with a CAI due to the larger piping diameter. Having no filter or pipe is the best but not fun on the street. The stock box is just a restriction everywhere. Blkzoomzoom believes the stock box and maf should remain stock so the measurements the maf take are optimal, not sure about how much of a difference it makes.

I'm stating that based on data taken from another member.

Also, many members on Honda-Tech have noticed decreases in performance w/ no intake/filter and even mesh on their turbos. Obviously this goes against theory, but its another example of reality not always agreeing.

I too have the stock air box with a K&N Filter........like mx3ownzjoo said, aftermarket intakes are way too expensive for what little gains it gives. I installed the K&N filter and opened up the ride side of the airbox with some dremel skills, and now i have the turkey sound......so maybe it works just as well.

That, and i like the look of the air box instead of an aftermarket intake system.
