View Full Version : 17" newbie - tires prices... ouch!

Just to prevent sticker shock in the future, I checked out Tire Rack for tire prices. $179/per for OE tires! I have to admit, I'm really enjoying the handling of the MSP, but $179/per?!?! :(

There are tires as cheap as $64/per, but what are people's experiences with going "cheap" on 17" tires? I've used Yokohama in the past with great results, on my MR2 Turbo, but I'd really like to keep tire changes below $400-$450. $800 is just too painful for me. :(

Input on best "value" for 17" tires for the MSP welcomed.

Thanks!

You'll get alot of different opinions on this because it seems everyone always thinks they have the best tire for the price. I will recommend the Yokohama AV ES100's. Tirerack sells the 215/45/17 for $100/tire. They are pretty sticky, road noise isn't an issue, and they wear pretty well. I've had some on the car since December and they still have plenty of tread left.

You get what you pay for. The OEM tires kick ass if it's warm and dry. BUT, they suck in the rain, are useless in the snow, and wear out FAST. The treadwear rating is a measly 140. That's why they grip so well. I got some new tires on order now. They are Goodyear Eagle F1's from www.treadepot.com (http://www.treadepot.com) $138 each including shipping. They are supposed to be awesome in the rain, and have a treadwear rating of 280.

I just got some yoko es100s. not as sticky right now as the worn down potenzas but i'm expecting better wet grip and longer life. maybe after a lil wear the dry grip will increase...

Can't go wrong with the Goodyear F1's in my opinion. I replaced my OEM's at 38,115 with a new set. Got a $75 rebate. Handling is just as good if not better and the grip in the wet is awesome. Much better treadwear rating and quieter too. OEM's were too noisy for my taste. But shop around, Yokohama's are good tires as well. I have them on my other two cars.

I've got a set of stock tires with a few hundred miles on them I'll sell you cheap. I bought my car right before the snow season and replaced them with all seasons. They have been sitting in my basement just taking up space. I'll sell for $240 + shipping for (4).

How old are they? Any dry rot? Shipping estimate to 48076?

List them on the FS section with pics and paper, and we'll PM. Sounds like a very fair price, and I can tell the tires I have on the car now aren't going to last long... :)

Here is the link to the for sale section. No they don't have any dry rot. The shipping would be $50.48 for all (4) sent individually

just bought some BF Goodrich G-Force Sport. pretty badass. good things to say, not as grippy as stock, but i was looking for something more durable. happy with the cornering. the sidewall is softer, but i've adjusted to it. i wore my stockers down to the nothing. they had just the vertical tread, no more horizontal. so it was about time.

I just got a set of NeXeN by recomendation from a friend at a tire shop. I was in a bind and the were cheap at $89.00 mounted and balanced. I've had then about 6 weeks and love them, great in the rain, nice on dry land, but suck when airborn. They have a 320 tread wear rating and a very quite. I will auto X them next month in Homestead.

widest wheel u can run is a 7.5". the lowest offset....i dunno. i've heard of people using as low as +40, maybe even a +38 or so.

Being that I trashed two sidewalls the night before by running over some barbed wire on 441 I was in a bind. He came and picked up my car w/ a flat bed, I had lost my wheel lock nut, he cut my rotors and installed prepurchased pads, and left my car in my parking place at my apartment. I really can't beat the price I payed.

I just bought some Falken Ziex 512s for $69 a piece, $33 shipping and I got them in a day (ground shipping from PA takes a day). I haven't gotten them mounted yet, but I already know what to expect. They will handle decently for an all-season, but won't grip nearly as well as stock because these are rated at 360 treadwear. Stock was 140. They are good tires for the money. I'll be buying rims and competition tires in the spring for the new autocross season.
