View Full Version : BOV "flutter" on off-throttle?

I just leased an '03 MSP, and it's got BOV "flutter" on off-throttle. I'm trying to figure out what the PO did to the car, so I can get rid of it. My experience is with the '91 MR2 Turbos, if that helps with my question.

The BOV looks stock (didn't check for part numbers), and it appears hooked up correctly and isn't venting to atmosphere. Does anyone happen to have any good pictures of the BOV and intake piping, so I can figure out if this thing is stock, and what was done to the car to make this irritating sound? :)

Or is there a simple vacuum-line mod he made to make the noise, that I can hook back up to get rid of the noise?

Thanks!

It's called turkey around these forums. If there is an aftermarket intake of any kind you will notice it much more.

sounds stock. Its called a BPV or diverter valve. It recirculates back into the intake as you know.

It should only flutter or "turkey" at higer rpm/boost shifts. At low shifts it should be silent for the most part.. or quiet flutter.
The stock BPV is a black Denso diverter valve and should be pretty small. It will say Denso on it. There should be a hose off the hot pipe (pipe from turbo to intercooler), then the BPV, then another hose that goes to the intake. This is a stock setup for the most part. Of corse there will also be a small hose for the vac. source, this opens the valve at the right time.
Congrats on your new car and welcome to the community. You will learn so much on here, just use the "search" button... everything has been discussed.

he seems to be looking for a solution to get rid of the noise. the solution: dual setup bpv/bov. there is a thread in the HOW-TO section.

I'm used to calling it a BOV (Blow Off Valve) or ABV (Air Bypass Valve). Guess BPV (By Pass Valve) is what Mazda calls it.

OK, makes sense. The car appears to have an Injen CAI, so that might explain the HUGELY loud flutter/turkey. If I go over 4k rpm, it's super-obvious. If that's stock, then I might just live with it until I decide to whether I keep the Injen or not.

But that exhaust has GOT to go. :( We're talking like being inside a steel kettle drum, and having someone beat on it with a ball-peen hammer. I like louds exhaust and all, but this is rediculous.

LOL funny
Getting rid of the Injen will not get rid of the sound... but it will more quiet. Let me know if you want more info.

maybe it could also be the wastegate? does the car have stock turbo?

The center bearing housing has "Garrett" on it. Does that sound stock?

What does the exhaust look like, see if we can ID it.

The turkey is normal for these cars, as pointed out by others...

I'm sending over to that thread, until I get to specific parts (I have a thread in stereos, looking for the factory under-radio doored pocket).

Thanks!

if you dont like the exhaust just sell it on here and get money for your lease payment, or add a resonator.
