View Full Version : Big Brake for rears question

I know there are several vendors that offer big brake kits for the front wheels, but can these also replace the rears with these kits. I'm thinking that the total performance package as well as the look all around would be a good thing after installing a set of 18" wheels.

Thanks for the comments.

I've often thought about the same thing, but with the brake bias being so much to the front as it is, upgrading the rear brakes wouldn't be beneficial compared to the cost. On the other hand, I do agree that small brakes in the rear look funny w/ larger rims and larger brakes up front.

some companies have a kit for the rear, but the cost (1,500 approx just for the rear) is really not worth it unless u have green burning a hole in ur pocket. the front kits made will not work on the back. i have MSP rotors and calipers on the front of my p5 (slightly larger) but we couldnt source a set of rear calipers from an MSP so i left the back stock w/ powerslots. perfect!

Why the hell would you need big in the rear. It only does 20% of the force on the protege...

it would be easy, and relatively cheap if you didn't mind losing your e-brake.. but that is the kicker, to keep it makes it impractically expensive, unless you just want to engage a line lock everytime you get out of the car.

line lock?

yeah, with a line lock, you press the brakes, close off the valve, and voila, the brakes are on, till you come back, and release the valve.

Like a park brake. Drag Cars use it to do big fucking burnouts without heating up the rear brakes... Front's Locked, Back Spin!

Still MUCH better than large rims with rear drum brakes :D

4 Bolt drums to 5 bolt Disk conversion... Better be looking into a P5 Brake Master...

I don't understand Why this is even a question. There is no performance reason to do Big In The Rear.

It is not necessarily for the performance factor. I am looking at the asthetics of the total vehicles appearance. Having customized several vehicles and seeing numerous others, the look of a big brake kit on all four wheels behind larger rims is a preference of mine. The build up of a vehicle does not always have to be performance related. Why would people spend thousands on turbos and suspension mods just to add several hundred pounds of stereo equipment.

I asked the question to see if anything was available. If not, I'll purchase a set of cross-drilled rotors and be good with that look.

Thanks for all of the responses.

dont they make a cover or something that sits behind the wheel but is big enough so you cant see the brakes ?? not sure what its called --- i think it might help with dust on the wheels ---- Not sure , any one care to elaborate (sp?)

I'm interested in 4 wheel Big-Brake upgrades too. I know that Stop Tech has a kit for about $2000 USD (but I thikn it's fronts only). Looking for some other options. For me it's mostly cosmetic too (I must admit. My 19s really dwarf my rotors and as they say,...go big or go home. Also, with all of the problems we have with the rear calipers seizing on the P5s, I would say that's one good reason to upgrade the rears.

Anyway,...what other options are out there? Preferrably something that would fit under 16" OEM rims for winter time.

Thanks in advance.

the bigger brakes from the msp can easily be swapped on and we sell the parts to do it.

How much bigger are the MSP ones? What price are we looking at for the upgrade?

That may be something to look into.

Just get all 4 from a MSP and put onto the P5.

Any discounts for doing all this at once, like a 4 wheel bigger brake kit?

subscribing to find out how much bigger they actually are.

yeah that's what i was thinking

why not go to a junkyard and grab the rear calipers and rotors off of a 929/626/6 or w/e and stick 'em on? should be far cheaper anyway

none of the aforementioned vehicles work.

The brake kit that I have (e-racer wilwood kit) looks great with my 17 inch rota attacks. For the rear, I have slotted stock replacement rotors and I painted the caliper black.

The slotting looks exactly the same on the front and rear. It doesn't look funny at all.

It MAY with 18s though, but I think 18s are too big on a Protege anyway.

(I need to take pics. My car looks pretty clean - Yellow, black hood, wheels, brakes)

Yes they are unnecessesary but for performance and asthetics I was thinking of getting the front VTTR 6-Piston kit and the rear Precision Brakes 4-Piston kit, getting them custom painted with the Mazdaspeed logo.

I have 18" Racing Hart CR rims so I would like to fill them up, more-so in the front.

It'll be pricey and it won't happen for awhile but it's an option.

Perhaps I'll do the Precision 4-Pistons all round and switch to 17" rims.

I would love to have 17"s but I dont have the cash to switch.

Anyone wanna trade sweet 18" Racing Hart CR Gunmetal multi-piece with silver polished lips for 17" high quality Black Gloss with silver polished lips?

I'm kinda serious. One wheel has very tiny marks from a giant chunk of asphalt and one wheel has been repaired from when a crowbar bent it up. But they are all on the car now.

Hit me PM.

well, ok

then pick a car it WOULD work off of and get it from a junkyard

If you want something that looks nice... There are things that can be bought elsewhere than the brake department...
