Has anyone else had this problem?

I was sitting in a parking lot with my friend, I open up my hood to check my oil real quick. I am looking around comparing my friends car and my car. I go to my back hatch to get a pair of mechanics gloves, and i hear, metal bening, metal scraping against each other, and then a clunk on the hood falling or what was left of the hood strut between the hood and the body.

Basically, if I had gone to the back 20 seconds earlier I would have had a realllllly nast headache. So have a quick look at the hood support strut, make sure its still in good condition.

Oh yeah, what happened was this. The stut bent to about a 50* angle, slid through the bottom part of the bracket so that the hood couldve slamed on my head/fingers or whatever else.

NO.

I don't see how that is possible unless you accidentally hit the support rod while working or that the end of the support rod (that hook) is already damaged.

or the support rod was already bent...i actually saw a salesperson at a dealership think that the hood of the van he was showing my parents was supported by hydrolics and tried to slam it shut...he bent the support rod instantly...
