After shifting into second gear, the engine revs up to 5,000 RPMs. Mechanic says it's the clutch. I'm not so sure. Any ideas???

like when you shift and "floor" it or give it gas it just revs and slowly slowly gathers speed if any???..yeah dude i got that crap happen on my at random times, it's the clutch...if it gets bad, like happen very often then i would advise getting a new clutch. but w/ my car knowledge i would also advise to ask around or wait for someone else to reply to this :)

if RPM's climb fast, and you dont accelerate fast with it, then yes its the clutch...
no real way around changing the clutch disk and either re-surfacing the flywheel and pressure plate or getting replacements for these as well

Thanks Alex and RyanJayG. Is $525 reasonable to pay for the clutch, resurfacing the flywheel, and labor?

sure, thats a decent price in alot of areas... I don't know where you live, but many places will charge almost $600 for just install, let alone clutch, and resurfacing.
I'd go for it. as long as the reputation of the shop is up to par.
