I'm looking at buying ASA JS1 15x7 wheels from TireRack, with either BFGoodrich G-Force Sports 195/55/15 (on backorder :( ) or Kumho Ecsta SPT 195/55/15. I also considered a 205/50/15, to make the tire appear a little less "stretched" when it's mounted on the 7" wheel.

1. 7" isn't too wide for a 3rd gen is it? My car is not lowered at all. (it's a '99 LX with the 14" steelies at the moment)

2. Would a 205/50/15 fit without any rubbing issues?

Thanks for any help.

Yea...Offset is important. I run a 15X7 +37 offset and I run 225's all the way around for racing, but the rear's stick out of the fenders a little.

15s: http://www.tirerack.com/servlet/CallJsp?target=wheelSearchCloseUp&wheelIndex=11&sizeIndex=0&showRear=no&setIndex=2&filterSize=&filterFinish=&filterSpecial=
16s:

Offset: +42mm
*lightweight* 17.0lbs / 18.0lbs
Bolt Pattern: 4x100

I might consider the 16s, but I'm afraid the roads here are too crappy to have 45-series tires. I'd rather have smaller wheels than have larger wheels where I need to replace one every year.

You should be able to run up to a 205/55 on the 16's with that offset. I don't think the extra inch width on the rim will cause any problems and 205/55's are fitting with the stock 16" Protege wheels.

The 15 x 7" wheels with +42 mm offset should be fine on your car. I would recommend the 205/50's rather than the 195/55's since the wider tread and lower aspect ratio will give you better handling. Also, the 50 aspect ratio should be okay even on rough roads.

I like the ASA JS1's. They're similar in appearance to my wheels. You can check the degree of speedometer error your new tire/wheel combo will produce by going to: www.1010tires.com/TireSizeCalculator.asp (http://www.1010tires.com/TireSizeCalculator.asp)

I checked the Miata.net tire calculator before shopping for new tires. It said the same thing as that calculator...1.7% speedometer error.

Looks like $730 will be the total. 4 ASA JS1 15x7, 4 BFGoodrich G-Force Sport 205/50/15, 4 McGard wheel locks.
Should have the wheels/tires in 1 day, and the locks in 3 days.
