View Full Version : Server Tuning
OK, so we're doing some tests to see if we can tune the server to run more efficiently. This is hardly brain surgery, it's the usual optimization techniques, shoulda been done long ago, but never got to it.
Still, browsing speed depends on so many variables (time of day, internet connection, etc etc) that we rely on your feedback. So browse a bit, post some threads, upload some attachments, and lemme know if this feels overall faster now than, say, the past past few days.

Is this why the server's been down a lot recently?
No, that was cause I was out in Italy while something screwed up, so it took a few days for me to get someone to fix it. It was a simple problem and I promise it won't happen again until next time.

Seems to be a bit quicker. Not a huge increase in performance, but it is definitely noticeable for me with Comcast (6 mbps) cable internet.
A while back (not counting the couple of days where the server went bezerk) it oftentimes took a few seconds for a page to start loading...or it would partially load, pause for a few seconds, and then load the rest of the page. It's much smoother now.
Thanks!!

Yeah...we've got a 50 shot of "NOS" injected into the CPU...got the button on my keyboard...you know that red key ;)
I hope you guys take a minute to realize and appreciate what goes into making your Mazda Forums experience a good one...it's not only what you see on the surface but the backend requires a lot of care as well...

Definetly feels better then it has been. Noticed immediate pick up in speed with login, general browsing and posting to threads.
No more slowness... horray!!!
Have nothing to upload or start new thread about... stuck at school for now, but will definetly check back when i get home tonight and see how it is at home.

The only thing I think is really bogging up the forum still is your sigs. On the forum I come from we aren't allowed pics in our sigs due to the bandwidth used and the lag it causes.
yea, I've notticed recently that forums have been a bit faster for me, but from time to time something times out and I cant get onto the forums from 10 to 30-40 minutes. Weird.......although internet works fine.

Mysql upgraded.
Seems like it's been slow today, on pretty much every click. As opposed to being super slow on 1 in 10 clicks.
Now that it's been a few days, what say ye?
I know that it used to hang (for < 5 min) a few times a day, and it no longer does it.
Does anyone notice that? I know I notice I stopped receiving error logs from vb.

Only reason I'm complaining is that even though the site ran a little bit slower before the "upgrade" over all it would still be faster. Reason being is that now it runs nice for 5 min then we have to waitX min cause the site just doesn't feel like doing anything and it'll spaz out. what did you guys "upgrade" and what are you planning on doing?

curiosity is kewl, but you have to realize that you're not the only one here. We have over 20,000 members on msprotege.com NOT including daily activity from guests or aka non-registered users just browsing forums by being redirected here from other websites. That is a lot...at that moment there were nearly a 1000 people browsing, posting, clicking etc AT THE SAME EXACT TIME! We only have 1 server with what was once decent specs...obviously we need better and faster hardware to keep up with community growth.
Enry can only pull a limited number of server tricks and tweaks...the bottomline is becoming painfully obvious...we need to upgrade and that requires more money...EVERY MONTH!
I'm looking into this more...Another problem we have is Enry is our tech expert and he just doesn't have enough time these days...It would be great if we could get some trusted tech support to assist with server maintenance/upgrades/tweaks etc...
To summarize...We need:
1. More Donations
2. Upgraded Server
3. Upgrade to vBulletin Version 3.5.1
4. Trusted assistance with server maintenance/upgrades/tweaks etc...
