Opinions wanted!

How out of whack is an estimate of $500 for brake pads for the MSP?

This is what the local dealer gave me as an estimate, for just the parts (4pads).

Now I know the dealer is always the most costly source, but is there something different about the pads used on the MazdaSpeed?

Like are they made from rare and exotic metal....or WTF?

These are Canadian dollars....BTW

Thanks all!

I just came back from a NorthEast dealer this morning. A front brake job costs me 110USD for front pads. Additional, I was charged 140USD for TWO hrs of Labor which included machining my rotors flat.

Total front brake job was 250USD. Probably paid $50 to much, but to me, brakes are the most important piece and I didnt want to use a reputatable local shop which quoted me 200USD.

by the way, the service department is just like the sales department at dealerships. those service guys get a base salary and then 3-10% of total service sales generated. you can wheel and deal in the back, however, be prepared for the same shit.

Yeah that price is probably at least $200 too much. The MSP pads are a "special" size and also a "special" material....but definitely are not worth $500. You'd be better off just buying aftermarket pads from somebody like Turfburn for that price. That's what I did - the EBC Yellowstuff pads have performance comparable to the stock pads.

do it yourself, get pads and rotors on all 4 corners from vendors from this forum for about half that.

Front pads for the MSP should be in the $60-$80 range at the most. Rears range from $35-$60. several companies make pads for the MSP.
The pads are easy to find if you do a search or ask a vendor. We offer KVR front and rear for the MSP. You have 1 or 2 options for pad material other than that, nothing special about them. Fronts and rears are slightly different profile than standard Protege.
Time wise, anyone proficient at doing brakes should be able to do all four in an hour in the driveway.
There are several different companies and several vendors offering them. Check them all.
