View Full Version : Best muffler for the MP3?

I am going to get a new muffler tomorrow for my MP3. My exhaust is set up with the stock header then a straight pipe w/o a resonator into an Apexi N1 muffler. I am not a big fan of this muffler as it is obnoxiously loud even with the silencer in it. When I get on it, it sounds like a loud wet fart, it sucks.

What do you guys recommend for a muffler. Is magna flow a good one to go with? And in your opinion, should I have a resonator put in to keep the noise down? I want to keep as much power as I can. Within a couple of weeks, I'm going to an OBX header without any cats.

Who is running a similar set up and what kind of muffler do you have?

Thanks all, any info is greatly appreciated. I just would like to get some opinions before I do this tomorrow morning.

I don't think the problem is the muffler so much. I think why you are getting the poor sound quality is because of your piping setup. A resonator would help out the situation greatly. A resonator isn't going to hurt your amount of power, especially on a n/a car.

I've heard a couple of Magnaflow systems and I have always been a big fan of them. Not too loud, but yet still agressive enough.

i like my racing beat cat-back, its got a resonator and it sounds pretty nice. i'm not sure if you wanted to replace everything again, but i'm happy with mine.

I second that.. with the header your car will be unbearably loud.. get a magnaflow muffler to put in line at the normal resonator location in the exhaust. you'll thank us later

Why put a magna flow muffler in the resonator location? What is that going to do for me that resonator won't do?

I was pretty sure that the header and straight pipe would be way to f'ing loud.

i have the greddy sp2 on my speed and love it. its a low growl. its the same as the mp3 but just deeper and a little louder but only in high rpms. at idle its very similar. and it looks great!

because resonators don't exaclt quiet the exhaust, resonators really just change the tone of the exhaust. Mufflers are used to lower the volume, resonators lower the tone.

I've heard a P5 with header, stock exhaust, HKS axleback. so it had the stock pipes, with the stock resonator, and it was loud and buzzy. it needed another muffler imho

I'm running the full wagner set-up with the cats and the SR Cat-back... gains are nice and it doesn't sound crappy. Nice mellow and deep tone at idle... and a nice aggressive growl when you get on it... i like it alot.
