View Full Version : Rubbing on 225/45/17
toyo proxes 4.
the fronts fit just fine. The rears suck.
I've had them on for 2 days so far and heard this odd noise when i floored the car & on corners. Well after looking the rear tires are rubbing right under the wheel well. Any idea on how fix this?
Here are some pics of the rear driver side

Looks like you offset is too small. Last year I had the same tires, same size and on stock rims (+55). No problems.

It dosent look to be that deep of a cut. I would roll your fenders. I had the same problems with me Falkens, I rolled mine and it fixed the glitch.
Do a search for rolling fenders.

i have 7.5 in wide wheels with a 48 offset, and 225/45/17 and i rubbed a little. the part of the rear fender that rubbed is toward the back door. if you feel around the wheel well. the lip is real small except for about 4 or 5 inches on the front of it. i took a rubber mallet and beat that wide part of the lip back and now i dont rubband if i do a little(over an extremely large bump that i should have slowed down for) at least the fender lip is bent upwards so the edge doesnt cut my tire

whats the offset on the wheels?? with the stock wheels it will rub on the strut. With any thing lower then 45mm offset you will rub on the fender.
45mm and 48mm is the optimal.
no idea what the offset is, but i'll find out.
when rolling the fenders does it just tuck them higher up?
will i have more problems when I lower the car?

fu(k that. someone tell me how to do it w/ a bat

yeh its hard and time consuming to do right. If you crack the paint which is easy to do, you'll rust very fast.
so the rims i'll need are 5 x 114.3 w/ a 45 or 48 offset?
what is the offset of the stockers?

stock are 17 x 7 +55, you can run upto a +42 with a 205 tire, and 215 but you will have to roll your fenders. +48 is perfect offset ON A 7 INCH WIDE WHEEL. offset differs depending on how wide the wheels are. use google and search for "wheel offset calculator" that's what helped me pick out my wheels, and then search for "tire plus sizing calculator" and use tt to chose tires.
the tires are a 225/45/17 so what offset would i be ok w/?

if you're on a 7 inch wide wheel, you want to go for a +48 to +52, but the onlyone of those you'll find a 48, and that's hard. the 48 will give you a fantastic flush look of the tire as well. personally i love my 16x7 +42 with the 205's it look sick, i'll post pics here when i get my wireless connection back up from this stupid hurrican and i can get onmy laptop.

Ur prolly OK with an offset of 50mm on a 7.5" rim...
i think i'm going to look at rev wheels, but i only saw them w/ a 40mm offset.
so exactly what kind of offset am i looking for w/ a 225/45/17 tire & if i lower the car ?
still a 45 or 48?

Definitely 48! I have a P5 but rub a bit with 215s and 45 offset. :(
so if i find rims w/ a 48mm offset does the width matter? 7 or 7.5?
I'll probably go w/ a 7.
if it's a 48mm offset then i think that rev wheels are out of the question. :(

i think you'll have to go with a 7" rim.
i have 17x7.5" rims with 215/45/17 tires. assuming you run +45 offset with 225/45/17 tires, you'd be sitting 4.5mm closer to the fender than me and 10mm wider than me...approximately. i'm pretty sure that'll put you into the fender.

i believe i may have posted those calculators a while back. trust me, they work, and if you use them then you will learn and be able to give others advice.

You should be OK if by stock wheels you mean the RH at +55 offset
sickspeed94

with 5 mm spacers and an extra 5 mm of tire on either side (225 - 215 = 10 and 10 devided by 2 = 5 (on each side)) the inside of the tire should be exactly the same distance from the strut (give or take a mm) and the outsides should come close o rubbing but not rub if i'm correct, and if you're not dropped at all i wouldn't even worry about it.
what's the offset on stock racing harts?

would a konig hole w/ a 45mm offset fit?
my current rims are a 39mm offset

Is there a benifit to running 225 on the stock RH rims? Is the bigger patch going to make a difference?

paul - use my calculations from my previous post....it might fit if you run a 7" wide wheel. if i have time, i'll run thru the measurements later and give u an approximation.
demonic - from what i understand, there is no advantage. you'd have to run a wider wheel to make use of the wider tire.

Rev wheels are 43mm offset. Im looking for tires now too. I hope i dont rub. I was gonna go 215/45/17

you're cutting it close. be safer to go with 215/40 or 35 tires.

i've got a 42 offset and they're 16's, i know if i run a 215 i'll rub for SURE i'm on 205's and they're like 1mm away from rubbing (on full coilover drop though) big deal go 215's on a +43 and roll your fenders, if you're ghetto like me you'll get 2 small pieces of wood a dyke (wire cutter not lesbian) and a channel lock and do it yourself.

Last year I used Proxes 4 225/45/17 and now I have P-Zero Nero M+S 215/45/17. Honestly, it's hard to tell the difference. Keep in mind that those 2 tires are quite different (I prefer the Pirelli). I reverted back to stock size for 2 reasons: the extra width is offset by the extra height and the ideal rim width for 225 is 7.5 inches. Indeed the Proxes sidewall bulged slightly while the P-Zero is very flush which is said to be better for stability. The 225 also rubbed a bit at the front under full lock (ex. while parking)
In term of feeling, the 225 gives a somewhat heavier steering and it feels it tracks a bit better on the highway but that's subjective.
Bottom line, I would lower the car a bit to take the advantage of a wider tire, otherwise there isn't much of a difference.
On the other hand, some tire makes are actually wider than other in the same size (but with same sidewall height), as Yokohamas and Goodyear (F1 GS-D3) compared to Toyo. That could be another option.

what width is the wheel? even with 7.5" though, i think you'll be ok. it's a 10.75 mm difference in tire height between 215/45 and 215/40. your call.
.. Dunno how much help it'll be, but I have a set of 18" x 7.5" wheels with 215/35/18 tires (front are Kumho ECSTA MX, rear are BF-Goodrich g-Force KDW-2) and I'm lowered on Tein S-Tech springs .. and I've never gotten any rub.
Maybe I'm just lucky?
