View Full Version : Whats that 'sensor' right before the MAF?

Kind of bored last night...decided to disassemble my air box and install a cone directly before the MAF (ghetto SRI) I thought my plans were going to fouled when I saw what I think is a temp sensor plugged into the top half of the air box….but when I pulled it out it looked like a plastic stopper more than a sensor. Right now the thing is just hanging on the side (no check engine light either)?!
I was wondering if anyone knew what the hell that thing is and if its being disconnected will affect anything?

its a temp sensor. i have mine plugged into some grommet in the engine bay. as long as its connected, you're fine.

good for sound EFX but maybe not so much for performance, IMO.

ya did nothing in terms of performance....well at least its less ristricted, but anyway turbo sound is alot more present and so is le turkey but apart from that the only difference i noticed is in my 2nd gear pull....hairline improvment!
i was thinking about drilling a hole directly into the cone and plugging that sensor there but alas no check engine yet so i'll wait!

i forgot to plug in my temp sensor once, so it was just hanging around. i didn't really notice any differece whether it was plugged in or not.

that's weird, it should give you a CEL

all it does is measure air temperature at the filter. as long as it is somewhere near the filter you shouldn't have a problem. it's called an IAT sensor, intake air temperature. has slight control in the ecu but i think i remember someone saying it doesn't really affect anything major. i would just zip-tie it up near the filter and should will be fine

i made a hole in my filter (i shortrammed my injen) and it works fine.
*EDIT* in the lpastic base on the side of the MAF

Yeah it only plays a part in a few key things... such as calculating ignition timing to determining how much to charge your battery.......nothing important at all.(freak)
And you are losing hp with your intake that way, it has been proven by a few people. The stock airbox is NOT restrictive.

The intake air temperature sensor (IAT) is used to help the ECU determine the air mass measured by the Mass Air Flow sensor. The MAF is a 'hot wire' flow meter which measures how much heat the air flow draws off an electrical heat element. I believe the ECU needs to know the ambient air temperature to complete this MAF calculation to also determine the air-fuel mixture and thus the fuel injector pulse durations.

come on guy... what would MSP's be without the turkeyage... that's like a gay orgy without the KY.

Well you got all the technical mumbo-jumbo in there.
Lets play a game. Name how many things the IAT actually affects, whether directly or indirectly.
I never had the turkey...even running 20psi on the upgraded turbo through the bpv and plastic pipes. Funny thing when you keep the factory parts.

i left mine disconnected by mistake and got the battery light.....does that count?

The real killer is why that happens.(boom08)

woo hoo, that is why my battery light was on. hehe. ya it went away a little bit after i pluged the iat back in.

its been about a week, still no codes or lights. I don't know, maybe its my car! I'm sure that making a small hole on the back end of the cone and sticking the sensor in there will rectify any problems you guys mentioned, but until i get a code or light i'll hold off (that or until i can buy my injen)

well all know that MSP's are like women, they're all moody and no 2 are alike, eventhe twins. they have fits and mood swings and just when you think you've gotten them exactly how you want them, they turn on you and blow the popsiclc stand (or block)
the moral of the story is, the world don't move, to the beat of just one drum... what may be right for you... may not be right from some, it takes different strokes to rule the world (dave chappelle)

Aha I bet my plug fell off it didn't feel like it clicked when I put it back on. Wow this was on like page 8 of my search for "battery light", definitely didn't think it would help.
Hooray. My car was running fine with the light on (I only drove for like 15 minutes) but the battery light was worrying.
