Hi,
I'm a newbie.
I just bought my protege 2 days ago. Ironically on the way home the day I bought it the check engine light went on. (notcool) I have noticed a severe loss of power especially while accelerating but also randomly while I am driving. The car will drive virtually normal for awhile and then all of a sudden start slowing down. Hitting the accelerater will increase RPM's but does not increase speed. The car has never stalled but when it loses power it feels like its pulling a 2 ton truck behind it.

This seems to be a common problem from some of the reading that i've done.
I went to autozone and they did a diagnostic. It showed air/fuel ratio and they suggested the 02 scensor. However, I think it could just as easily be the MAF scensor which is warrantied by mazda for 7 years. I have an appointment to get the car checked out by a mechanic on monday.

What do you think? 02 scensor or MAF scensor? Does the code tell which scensor it is specifically or did autozone make an educated guess?

Thanks

I just found out that my model and year has a Recall on the MAF scensor. I'm taking it in to mazda Tuesday to get it fixed. Hopefully this will solve the problem. Hope this post helps someone else out with the same problem.

The check engine light code tells pretty specifically what the error is. You should have written down the exact code # that they read from your car, and the exact description. The code reader has a short description that goes with each code. Like "Bank 1 Too Lean" or something. This tells the symptoms, but doesn't always pinpoint the source of the problem. Like a thermometer telling you that you have a fever, but it could be caused by many different things. It might be O2 or MAF, but it's even harder to say without knowing the exact code.

wouldn't be surprised if it turns out to be the maf. I'm on number 4 :(

damn...how much did the MAF cost you each time? I take it that's a simple swap with the old one? No need to take it to a mechanic right?

our MAF is a crappy part which mazda knows as they extended the warranty to 7 years on it. I did pick up a couple at the junkyard for 20 bucks.

I'm experiencing exactly the same problem at highway speeds on my 2001 Protege.
Took it to the Mazda dealer - he first replaced the O2 sensor and then the catalitic converter (free under 7 year warranty). This didn't fix the problem.
Was yours fixed and how?

Thanks

dude its been a year and a half since this thread was active...

but to me it sounds like a random cylinder misfire...did you get the code read by the dealer? what was it?

Odd...I've ran seven years on my original MAFS without any problems. From my experience, the MAFS being in error would cause the air fuel ratio on this engine to get all screwy (it's very touchy as it is)., and lose power. o2 sensor could be a problem, but rarely would throw it off bad enough to cause THAT much of a problem. I'd check your intake seals and your vacuum valves, might be causing too much unmetered air into the chamber.
