How hard is it to change? I have a 99 ES. I looking at replacing the stock ones with new white faced ones.

depends on how you do it...I went through 3 gauge clusters trying to get my 99ES upgraded to aftermarket reverse glow white face guages. Broke gas and temp needles every time. Pissed me right off. I did figure out how you have to do it though. DO NOT attempt to remove the gauges at all! They WILL snap. You have to slip the needle through the hole and then make the hole of the gauge face go under the plastic part of the needle so it's touching the metal shaft part that connects to the tiny motor, and then it will fit the back part on. Too bad I'm too chicken to try it on my only working cluster left.
There are also stock protege's with white gauge faces. Don't remember the year or trim package they started at. Search the forums and you'll find stuff.
You can swap clusters from certain years also (to get the white ones)...a search will reveal that info as well.

I don't know dude. Just for the trouble of putting the white faced gauges on, it is a very, very, very risky procedure. Too many people on here have broken needles trying to put those on. But its up to you I guess. In my opinion, just get some Dave B gauge rings to 'spruce' up the cluster a bit.

yeah I don't think I'll be changing the faces any more but the rings I might consider doing, thanks for the help though

I got mine from Dave B (Dave Bodde), but I think that Street Unit also just came out with some.

yeah i think they are nice, but as said before, the risk is breaking a needle (dark) in the installation

like sk8er said, if you're going aftermarket make sure they're the ones that slip over the needles. and even then you still have to be careful with them.
mild stress on them and they brake, especially the temp and fuel ones.
I have reverse gauges from procarparts.com. like 30 bucks and one of my favorite mods.

yep. reverse gauges from procarparts.com although I've seen sets of those on ebay. they make those and another reverse style with indiglo lighting in the middle (ugly as hell IMO).
if you go with those be careful sliding them over the needles. they fit but barely.

Ya know, I'm not really a fan of reverse glow gauges, but those are great looking. I might really consider getting myself a set of those. How much was shipping on PCP? My friend said that they usually won't be too expensive, but they can sometimes rape you on shipping.

shipping wouldn't be but a few bucks
FYI - by day, the gauge faces are more of a silver color

i went on PCP earlier and they had some gauge faces for 9.99. They only had a daylight picture though, so I couldnt tell if they were the same as yours. Could you look and confirm that, because i might buy them. thanks in advance.

go to ebay and search "protege gauges" and you'll see some there but make sure the holes are big enough where the faces will be able to slip over the needles
Bartron8000
09-26-2005, 09:19 PM
so how do i know if they slip on cause no one on ebay is really saying they slip on?
Witchdoktor
09-26-2005, 10:13 PM
the ones from procarparts.com do slip over the needles so compare any other ones to them

So i've been looking around for a few days, but still no luck for what I want. All ebay has right now are hte ones with the colored center, but if you look back a few posts, I want the ones similar to witchdoktors. Just thought I'd post an update.

I don't know what years are affected but the gauge face may cover up some icons from the factory faces
