DETROIT — Mounting problems with its retractable hardtop reportedly may delay the introduction of the new Pontiac G6 convertible until January or beyond.
Details on the early glitches were reported in Monday's edition of Automotive News, which cited supplier sources as saying the hardtop has flunked durability tests. The power-operated top is supplied by Karmann.
The publication also said the G6 convertible is experiencing fit problems between the deck lid and rear fenders. Spokesmen for Pontiac and Karmann maintained the top meets GM specifications.
GM earlier said the G6 convertible would launch in January, but suppliers said the car originally was to have gone into production this September. Now, a Pontiac spokesman says the vehicle will be available "in the first quarter of 2006," according to the publication.
