i was just wondering if there was an easy way to add a factory tach to the protege without having to go to mazda to do it or if the best route is to add an aftermarket tach... please help

you're probably best off putting in an aftermarket tach if you don't want to go to the dealership.

you can either swap out new cluster or add aftermarket tach...a lot easier to go with an aftermarket tach

you can go to junkyard and look for a ES (white gauges) o LX cluster, hopefully it will just go right in.

Yes, the wiring for the tach is already in the DX, I'd look for one at a salvage yard, also.

Yep, just look around in junkyards or call parts companies....I chose an LX cluster to match the green lighting and keep the stock look...4 screws and three clips and you're done.

good point about the lightning, because ESs have red lightning

Thanks. I had read up about converting the lens colors and IMO it is just easier to get the appropriate cluster, unless you are doing some custom lighting.
