i recently bought a '99 protege 1.6L at an auction. it had rims on it but other than that i think everything is stock. i'm new to this forum and fairly new to cars in general, this one in particular, so any help or advice or suggestions anyone can give me would be awsome.

more specific: how can i get more low end power? i don't really want to spend the money on a turbo yet, but i need somthing, cuz my accel. just blows asswads.

You can put an intake, exhaust. Is your car 5spd or auto. If manual you can put a light weight flywheel from a Mazda miata. That help put more power to the wheels.

unfortuanaly without boost the 1.6l is just a noise box, cai, headers, ect .. make a bit more power but mostly change the noise, however this engine is a boost beast, short stroke, thick rods, it can take a beating, 12psi can be ran daily on it and hiboost has done a test run with 100octane fuel and 20 psi making 290whp on a stock engine..

so basically sticking a turbo in this will do everything that is needed for the car to be faster? some of my buddies say turbo only helps at like 3-4 k rpm and i need low end power like 1-3 k rpm

it's a 5speed

and what is a light weight flywheel?

boost kicks in at about 2400 to 2600, my buddy can hit full boost 8psi , at 2800rpms, all i can say for 2500lower is not keep it there.. 90 percent of the time u wont be in that range anyways, and u can always launch at a higher rpm..

a lightned flywheel form a miata fits on the 1.6l motor. Thats assuming that you have a 5speed. It does help acceleration greatly.

aluminum flywheel, weighs 8lbs ur stock one weighs 30-40 if i remember correctly
lighter the rotating mass faster the revs can be..

all 4cyl cars have crap power from 1-3000 rpm, thats just how life is, but the nice thing is that you can rev the snot out of them, it wont begin to shine untill 3000rpm with any mod you do. the 3000rpm to 6500rpm area is where you will make the most power

dear lord its not that heavy, 18lbs is the weight of the flywheel on the 2.0, I'm pretty sure its the same or less on the 1.6

the stock is around 12-16lbs on the 1.6L

ahh, well i remember wrong, maybe its the hood that weighs that much...

The stock is 14lbs. I found the info that Dave potter gave me. you can purchase one from (www.healtoeauto.com).

true. i'm rarely there now, but what do you mean launch at a higher rpm? like rev it and pop the clutch? for some reason my car refuses to burn out, so when i try a quick start it just sort of sputters and then i have to accelerate from like 2000rpm

how high are you revving it when you launch? If it bogs to much at 3000, launch at 3500. You dont really want to just dump the clutch, ease into it like you would starting normaly, unless you do want to do a burnout then just rev high and dump. If I was able to get the tires roasting on a 1988 323 your should be able to get something out of your car.

trust me the stock 1.6l manual can do some burnouts, i done it in my friends car, i dumped the clutch at 4k , but for a good launch , 3500rmps and ease into it is great to launch, as for me, foot on brake, stomp gas , it goes to 2k and left off the brake, and ZOOOM ZOOM i still dont go anywhere... haha

i've done burn out on my 1.6l manual as well. I smomked up the whole street burning thru my crappy tires on my steelies. Like everyone said ease out the clutch, dont dump it.

Not to threadjack or anything, but what would help with acceleration on an auto?

Probably a performance torque converter.

Something from Lentech or Levelten.com?

It might give a little better acceleration. It kinda like a flywheel on a manual. I had one on my previous car, which was a Vw jetta. it hauled ass when i has it install. I know its different from a protege becuz the vw has great low end torque. But it did improve the accel. I dont know how the auto proteges are.

So if an improved torque converter works like a flywheel on a manual, then to get even BETTER acceleration I could get an underdrive pulley kit as well? I hear those weigh less than the stock pulleys which in turn gets your crank pulley turning faster----> revs quicker??

but gotta watch it, dont go above 160whp on the auto unless u get it rebuilt with a lentech valve body or boom, just ask Danny what happens..

160 whp would easily be surpassed with the HiBoost kit, right? So that means i would have to upgrade my Torque converter and valve body to protect my auto? Would adding the UP add to the risk of blowing the tranny?

Steve how close are you to having the money for the turbo kit ??? Let me know, as I can answer 90% of these questions you have been having to make your car faster, in person...I'm literally like 2 minutes from your house

Sadly, im not even close. And I won't be until I finish paying off my car... I have about another 4 or 5 months (I think?). Then I will be able to have an extra 261.24 extra in my checking account every month!!

I was going to buy the upgraded TQ and valve body after I pay off some of the CCs. Maybe a UDP and cams as well. Get my acceleration up a little bit before I start saving for the turbo kit.
