hi there
i have a 98 1.6 mx5 that is used as a daily runner by herself but otherwise i drive it week nights/ends and although i want to go trbo the market in ireland is not existant. i could get a mazda approved bbr system for £5000 sterling chich is a complete system but the guy seems to be a bit of a plonker, the question is then what do i go for ????
the smaller bits that have to be done should be done in the next few weeks so i need to start looking at real power and would like some advice from anyone who can help.
Thanks
JAMES

turbocharged miatas are hilarious. you should be able to hit 100 km/h in just shy of 6 seconds and do a 1/4 mile (400 meters?) in about 15 to 16 seconds. the car is small enough that it feels much faster than it really is.

so the work begins .
on to the rolling road to see where i am starting from.
new plugs and leads.
in-line octane boost.
next stop filters and the list goes on.
thanks for your help lads keep in touch with any news and i will keep this up to date with progress.
Sweet, did oyu decide which kit you're going with?
The Flyin Miata ones are great quality from what i've heard.

not decided yet but i think for the minute it will be the greddy kit.
i have to take herself on to a track and give some lessons in handeling it.
the kit sounds easy, functional and good value so it can be upgraded in the future.
the only thing is will it work well in a 98 1.6 ??? can any one tell me ??

There is a guy in the Greddy forums that has an NB with a 1.6. Not sure how it works with him.

I run 14.0 @103mph at 12psi and that is on bald street tires and a horrible launch.
Easily a 13 second car.
I have FMII @ 12psi, and a few other mods....the car HAULS. And it all is mostly 'bolt on'
If you prefer to DIY..greddy is the way to go. But in the end you'll only use the turbo and manifold...everything is usually replaced--but I COULD be wrong.

w00t for FM kits
Thanks,
Here are some pics of my car and it's setup:

On the FM kit, let me say FM has been integral in the turbo-ing of my miata.
I bought the kit USED and they still give me FREE support. I have bought a few goodies from them over the years too...gauges...chassis bracing...soon a roll bar (free shipping december)...and I cannot complain one bit. The instructions are always dead on and there is a huge tuning base as well.
Now I know for fact there is a huge Greddy tuning base also, but I don't have exposure to it, unfortunately, so I have nothing bad to say about ANY Greddy'd miata--or car for that fact.
But, after you realize what a turbo kit consists of you'll realize it doesn't take a doctoral degree in science to come up with your own kit, possibly better than ones out there.
All that said, if you are looking to bolt-on a turbo and go, you could possibly do this with the greddy and enjoy the 6psi or so, with a starion intercooler, and a bipes bpu or ecu (i forget)...135 to 150hp...maybe need a fuel pump or 1.8 injectors or Aftermarket fuel pressure regular (AFPR).
Now, with the FMII you get a complete engine replacement--which I unsure if that is available for your car---they have a new hydra though.
I guess do a little research now at the above listed sites (where I am members too) and come back here and ask more questions. Feel free to contact me at any time.

My friend has an AVO T28 Miata. It ran a 13.3 on 195 series Azenis a few months ago...9lbs of boost. It's easily a 12 second car.

excuse my lack of Miata knowledge, but why does FlyinMiata exclude the 1998 miata from both the Ubercharger and the Turbo kits?

they cater to the US market. Here in the states, we didn't get a 98.
you also have to remember that the OP has a 98 with a 1.6l which was not an option in the states as well, after 93. So you'll have to call FM if you want to go their route before you order. The Greddy may be the only option..

FM kits are the shit, don't get me wrong. But $5k+ is a lot to swallow at 1 time. Especially since i only paid $4k for the car itself.
With the Greddy, i paid $1200, plus full exhaust, and a Bipes, and I'm out about $2k. and I get ~150hp.

wow, I had no idea we didn't get a 98... interesting.
is the international '98 version physically similar to a '97, '99 or neither? (exluding the 1.6 engine you already mentioned)

Like I said....I was lucky and got mine used...but some people like to 'pay for what you get' and some people can't be imaginative like greddy owners.
I'm sure *I* could build a kit..but it sure is nice to make one payment and a weekend later have 220hp to the wheels :-) ..and tech support too.
I actually bought my 1.6 with the hope of buying the greddy kit b/c I was on a tight budget but when the used FM kit came along I couldn't resist :-)
Where there's a will---there's a way.
And
You either have more time, money, or skill.....

Can you please give me some more information on your friend.
I would like to know if he's pulled anything for weight..and what are the specs on his turbo?
I'd love to run a 12.9 by switching out my turbo...but I'd hate to lose daily driveability.
I can literally stomp the gas and disappear or jump 5 car-lengths on MOST cars...i'd hate to stomp the gas and sit and wait for the car to spool up :-)

PSI is not what you should be looking at since it is not directly proportionate to HP. The size and model of the turbo makes a huge difference in the ratio of power/PSI. A t3/T4 will make just as much HP at 6 PSI as T25 will make at 10psi. Miata blocks are very strong. 300 HP is no problem at all if it is tuned correctly.
