Just curious if anybody with the 2.3l has removed the VTCS butterflies in the intake manifold. I was reading up on the 2.3l motor today and found that it had them. They are not screwed in like the Fs but I do believe they are removable. The intake manifold is kindove a pain to remove but can be done without removing much else. The hardest part would be is to trick the pcm into thinking they are working sense it is acutally monitioring the system unlike the Fs series. However I already came up with a couple of ideas.
So how many people have done it?

You wish your Mazda 3 trapped 105. Maybe with HiBoosts kit, but even I am not crazy enough to call that stock.

I drive Mazda3's, 6's, 5's, rx-8's, etc. etc. everyday. Unless you did some turboing or supercharging you will not get close to 13.'s.

Running a different ignition system? If this is the case, how do you think you can get much better than coil on plug?
Also I hope you are still running iridium plugs....

Mp5jeff is drunk and I am rolling with it.
I still would like to know why you would increase the gap... The factory plugs have a pretty good size gap as it is.

Do the focus 2.3's have it also?
I'm not positive but I imagine so... As long as they are fairly new (00-01 and above) and also have the plastic intake manifold.

i've had VTCS removed for about 5 months now. i actually just tried to swap it with someones stock one so Juan could do more accurate tuning for the 6's kit. but for some reason my car doesn't like the stock one anymore?? won't idle at all with it in place?? I'm swapping mine back on Sat morning hoping she'll like that better.
As far as removing the IM, i've done it a good 10 times now and it only took me 11 minutes to remove it this morning (though i think i have more room in the 6 than the 3 has?). doing all the tweaking took about an hour, mostly just trying to figure out what to do. and a bit more time to seal things up and let the stuff dry.
with it removed, especially in cold weather, cold starts are a bit scary. very irratic breathing until it warms up. feels really good above 4500 though, it's only a small improvement, but hey, it was pretty much free.
