my GF has a 2000 protege ES. Engine light came on today. We pulled a code 420, bad cat. I called some local shops that wanted $$$$ for it so I'm looking online for something cheaper. Figure if I'm going to fix it I might as well get some performance out of it. Any ideas?

eBay. Get a Magnaflow Carsound for 55 including shipping. It will be at your door in 3-4 days. A good exhaust shop should charged you around 70 to weld it in.

Thanks guys. I can't believe its so difficult to find a cat for this car. I've been online almost 2 hours and found lots of things for the 2.0 and 2001+ but this cars seems to have fallen into the aftermarket abyss. What gives?

cats are not made just for one car... what exactly are you looking for? What are you planning and to what.

You won't find a bolt-on hi-flow cat midpipe unless you want to drop 280+ shipping on a MAM midpipe. Better to buy a $50 cat off eBay and have it welded in for a little more than that.

And I was just thinking-- you know what?? If the 2000s are like the 2001-2003 sedans then it must be your pre-cat if it's throwing a sensor. If she ran rich or something bad happened that'd be the first one to get f'd up anyway.

In that case get a $200 OBX header which eliminates the first cat and do the $3 spark plug non-fouler trick to elimate the CEL light. If your first cat is f'd you're probably better off just doing that. Your second (main) cat shouldn't even be in the sensor loop although if it's totally ruined you could have a CEL from that too. When I got my hi-flow cat put in the other day the guy showed my a ruined cat and it basically clogs up your whole exhaust system-- you WILL know by how the car runs.

BTW putting on a catless header is probably the best single power mod you could do and not too much. I'm sure your girlfriend will be racing Vin Diesel in no time. (stoned) :D

Also if your mileage is under 80,000 then you can get your cat replaced free under warranty. Any Mazda dealer will do it.

Thanks for all the tips. The cat is going to have to be put on hold for a while. A week ago the GF was driving along and ran over something. She doesn't know what but she hit it hard enough to not blow the tire, but the rim! I pll the wheel off the car and the tire looks perfect, but on the inside of the rim there is a half dollar sized hole. It only happened on the LF. Sux too becuase we just got a set of dunlop sport 9000 and now this happens.

you know, I should've come here first. It probably would've saved me a few days of looking for a replacement. I finally found one through NTB and it should be here tomorrow. For future reference though (gf is easily distracted while driving) are there a lot of people here who have extra 15" ES rims for 2000 pro?
