Nice - just got the accessory catalog from the dealer - but still not sure what the actual availability is.
The accessory catalog shows a few things that I didn't think would be made available - like a drop down DVD system (from the ceiling). I'll probably give the parts dept a call in the next couple days to see if they can order the rear scuff plate and the roof rack.

Okay, so I saw the roof rack last night and it isn't as ugly as I initially feared. I'll put up a couple of pretty awful pictures of it when I get some time. Let's just say that it is nowhere near as nice as the European "roof rails". :(
It holds 169lb max of weight - how does this compare to other vehicles??

Mazda's MPV roof rack is only rated for 100lb, so 169 sounds pretty good.

Just got home from the local dealer.....the regional trainer was here today in a Phantom Blue (dang!...missed it) doing dealer training on the 5.
Anyway, they also finally got some brochures and an accessory brochure.
The accessory brochure shows a two cross-bar setup sort of like a Yakima or Thule rack. No lengthwise rails like on the European models. As I matter of fact, in one picture, it shows a bike rail on the roof rack....and it is a Yakima bike rail.
It also shows a ski/snowboard rack (branded Yakima)...only 1 board wide, maybe 3 pairs of skis if they are loaded bottom to bottom, not side by side, and a 13 cubic foot closed cargo box, 55" long by 35.2" wide by 18.2" high. If I look closely at the picture, it shows the cargo box is a Thule. There is also an open roof luggage "basket" with a cargo net, measuring 44" long by 39" wide by 6.2" deep. It says "Yakima" on it. So it appears regular Yakima/Thule type add-ons will fit this rack.
The rack looks to attach in the fittings under the rubber plugs on the black roof trim, where the European style rails would be mounted.
Weight wise, the brochure says 100# max.
If I had a scanner, I would scan stuff, but no scanner...sorry.

Ahh, does that mean you have one now, or just looked at one at the dealership?
If you have one, any pictures coming soon?
Was it the one from the accessory brochure with the Phantom Blue 5 on the front; the rack being pictured on page 4 at the bottom?
Maybe Mazda is supplying a different roof rack in Canada??

I don't have the accessory brochure so I can't help you there - I looked at one at the dealership, but decided not to get it. I am more interested in the European roof rails, which appear to fit in the same place. (and look a hell of a lot better)

Part # for the roof rack is: CC43-V4-701F.
No DVD player shown for the console, just the In-Dash 6-Disc CD/MP3 player and a Cassette Player (2 separate units).
The brochure does show a DVD player with a 7" screen (entertainment system), looks like it mounts in the headliner. Says it includes a remote control & 2 sets of wirless headphones. Also says it needs an installation kit, 1 for moonroof or 1 for no moonroof.
The vehicle brochure has this noted as "late availability".
No prices for any accessories.....will probaby have to check with a local dealer.
There is some place on the web that is selling some accessories.....don't have that web address handy, but maybe some alternate sources will have more items as time passes.
Found the link for a site selling some accessories....scarfed it from another Mazda5 forum

Hey guys: Add me to the growing list of those interested in the Euro Roof Rails. Picked up our Whitewater Pearl M5 GT Wednesday and the family absolutely loves it. I have asked the dealer here to see what he can find out about the Euro rails but I think it might be best to see if a contact can be established in Europe. We have relatives over there so I will look at whether it is possible to import the racks in. I will post to the forum any updates

Just an FYI from another 5 owner -- Protege5, that is. My P5 came with the factory rack and they sold "adapter plates" made from aluminum. The factory bike rack was a Yakima, so the "adapters" will fit Yakima accessories. I got a different Yakima bike rack and it fit great.
Odds are the rack for the "5" will be Yakima as well. I've got pics if it will help anyone.

Euro roof rack is a dead issue for NA Mazda 5s. The Euro versions have a different mount point and understructure which is not compatable with the NA vehicles. Even if you were willing to try and make it fit the cost with shipping from UK would be over $1000 US. I personally went with the Mazda rack, its OK but too narrow (Can mount only 3 Thule Criterium bike holders). The Mazda rack is made by Thule and I see the potential to replace the cross bars with some longer ones to increase the width of the rack. I will update if I do this.
Some other members have installed Yakima racks which recently developed a fit or the Dynasport from Perrycraft which involves drilling into roof.
Good Luck!

Your 5 looks pretty good with that roof rack. It's the one thing that i miss about my old Montero Sport...if there wasnt enough cargo room then i'd just strap it to the roof :P
Did it require any drilling? And more importantly does it interfere with the sunroof. I live in So Cal and cant live without it :P

Anyone know if the Protege5 rack from Mazda will fit the 5?
I have one leftover, and may try to rig it up if the mount holes are similar. If it's wider or whatever, I'll get some Thule load bars and drill out the rivets to make it the right width.

The stock rack I've got is quite tall so that no matter what you put on it the moon roof can still open underneath it. I can't tell for sure, but it looks like those euro rails are a bit low and depending on the placement of the cross braces or just what you put on top of them that you might not be able to open the moon roof. They still look great though!

One of the problems with the Mazda rack for the 5 is that its just too narrow. I ordered Thule LB50 bars from LLBean (great price to Canada) drilled out the original rivets and installed the longer bars. Used stainless 1/4 inch button head hex bolts which I put right through the plastic cover for the foot. Its a bit of a process to get on and off but it works much better than I anticipated. Last year I transported bikes on a hitch rack with only two on the roof. The back of the van came down quite a bit with ~ 80 lbs of bikes and 75 lbs of rack, not to mention the cantilever effect of the rack sticking a couple of feet off the back. See picture from this year, with the same load last year the rear wheel was just inside the edge of the wheelwell, ~ 3" difference. It handles better, no one flashes their lights at me and I have unincumbered access to the rear gate. If anyone wants details on this mod please email me.
Somebody at my dealership asked that I post pictures of my roof rack. It's been a while, but I'm doing it now!
So, it's the Mazda rack, with two SportRack Piranha bike supports (with wheel off).

Excellent! Crossbars look great.
I was going to post a request for info on these, but noticed a 5 with the Mazda bars and a Thule box in a local parking lot last week.
I don't have a beef with the bars as opposed to the 'in-place' rails, and the fact that they look almost identical to the Volvo crossbars on my 03 S40, then the Thule box should be interchangeable between the 2 vehicles (2thumbs)

I was not sure if you are able to revive this OLD-OLD thread (boom02)
Well, the time has come and I will definitely need a cargo box. The in-laws are coming so I need to place one of them on the roof (evil). Just kidding, I need the extra space for traveling. I've read several threads around and I would just like to confirm I'm getting the right things. I'll go OEM for the rack itself (to play safe) and I'll get a Thule cargo box like the one sold OEM (both are accessories in the MazdaUSA website, but damn expensive)
OEM roof rack, part(s): CC43-V4-701G
Thule Cargo Box: Cascade or similar, 15-17 cu. ft. capacity
Does it look OK? Any comments? I'll do some pricing research as soon as the parts are pinned down...
Thanks!

Sorry for reviving this old-old-old thread but when my dealer gave me the part number for the rack and i wanted to confirm it, this thread came up first in a google search. Since I'm now a member I thought I'd confirm what I wanted to know and now know definitively, for any future searchers:
The Mazda OEM rack for the 5 IS a THULE rack.
The 5 has hard screwdown mount points under the rubber caps on the rain gutters on the roof.
The crossbars are standard Thule square crossbars, but they don't overhang the risers - they are perhaps 43-44 inches across, shorter than Thule's 50" version.
The risers (or whatever you call them) are a special fit for the 5 but are keyed with standard Thule lock cylinders.
The rack installs with no tools. Initial time may be a half hour, but once you know how it works, it's 5 minutes off, 5 minutes back on.
Thule can sell you a nearly identical rack, with the Thule logo instead of the Mazda logo, that secures exactly the same way in the same mountpoints. It has the 50" bars instead of the shorter Mazda ones. It costs almost exactly the same price and has the same weight limit (165 lbs / 75kg). I like the Mazda one better because it's tidier without the overhang, but the Thule-branded one will hold slightly more.
One final point - the Euro sliding rails probably require adapters, as almost every factory rack provided by any other manufacturer does. I love that Mazda gave us a straight rebranded Thule rack, since it means no adapters, no goofy-low weight limits, and easy-on, easy-off installation.
Hope that helps everybody who stumbles on this thread by searching Google for the rack's part number.

The Inno rack for the Mz5 is ~$220 from ORS Racks Direct. It has a lower weight limit (140lbs) than the Thule or Yakima (165lbs) but I doubt that will make a difference in your case.
Hmm.
Looks like the OEM can only hold 100lbs and is more expensive.
Anyone have an Inno?
I dont need to put much weight in it, mostly clothes and junk for a vacation, 100 should be fine.
Id like something that doesnt mount with drill holes if thats even possible as it wont stay on but for long trips that we arent flying to (not many). BUT, if they use factory holes in the roof rail groove that may be ok if it comes with plugs or a cover?
Im auto savvy, but Ive never messed with roof racks so forgive me if I sound idiotic.
I appreciate your help.
Hopefully I can find a top box on craigslist or borrow someones for the trip (trying to plan a clearwater fl trip from Ohio\michigan line).

No, the OEM holds 165 lbs. There's conflicting information because most "factory racks" have a 100 lb limit, but the OEM rack for the 5 is not a "factory rack", it's a rebranded Thule and it has a 165 lb limit.
You're not going to find any cheap solution that works well. The OEM rack and Thule or Yakima racks all come in right around $300, and since they use the fixpoints in the roof (the covers snap out and snap back in when the rack comes off) it's clean, easy, and quick. And strong. I don't know anything about Inno; if it uses the fixpoints it's probably fine but I wouldn't use any non-fixpoint system on a car that has fixpoints such as the 5. I've messed with all sorts of goofy arrangements in the past, and the fixpoints are so much better.
Once you have the rails you can choose almost anything to put on top of there. Heck, if you don't mind the hit in gas mileage you can use tiedowns to attach literally anything you want up there. Just remember it will brutalize your gas mileage if it's not aerodynamic.
Hmm.

Just for this trip flying is about 1000 even for 4, renting a car is (have no clue for a week) 200? so thats 1200, driving will cost about 260 round trip plus 300 for rack, 100 for top box thats 660, saving 540 plus getting to keep the equipment for another trip. My hope is the roofline\mounts for the 2011 mazda5 are exactly the same.
Guess I need to travel more.
Thanks guys, guess the OEM isnt so bad at 280.

I don't have the moonroof, but the OEM rack (by Thule) is taller than Thule's own-branded rack for the 5, presumably to allow clearance for the moonroof. There are several rack threads, and this has been addressed in other threads.

It has the 50" bars instead of the shorter Mazda ones. It costs almost exactly the same price and has the same weight limit (165 lbs / 75kg). I like the Mazda one better because it's tidier without the overhang, but the Thule-branded one will hold slightly more.

Nice post Lindsay.
Does anyone know if this is still the current part number?

I don't have a rack on my 5 yet, but I am familiar with Thule from other cars. A benefit to the Thule rack would be that with longer bars, you could probably fit a fork mount bike attachment outside the rack feet on both sides if there is enough room. That would free the entire center for a box or other attachments. It also puts the bikes in a more easily accessible location. I had my old VW GTI & Jetta both setup that way. Watch your head getting in though, I nailed it a couple times and almost knocked myself out.

I just put on a Yakima rack (but not the one that they say is supposed to be for the 5 ;) ). I used the #11 landing pads (like the ones for the Mazda3, the CX7, 9, etc...) in the factory roof anchors that you use with the Mazda Thule stock rack, with 50" Yakima round bars, and control towers. The fit is perfect, it looks a lot better than the Yakima system that uses the Q Towers and clips, and my sunroof opens fully without any issues. In my opinion it looks a lot better than the stock Mazda/Thule system. Just my opinion.

Hi Lindsay,
do you have a link or # for the identical Thule rack one with longer bars?

I'd like a picture too, but it seems that the capacity is only 100 lbs for that rack vs. 165 for the Q clips, something to think about.

Hi all,
I've been contemplating a roof rack. Originally I was just thinking cargo box, but now I might need it to carry a canoe sometimes. I could go with a basic foam block carry method, but I think I'd like to use a rack.
The stock rack doesn't look very wide in comparison to the thule or yakima. The one canoe is 35" wide at its widest point, and the stock rack doesn't look too wide, but the specs are hard to come by.
Thule and Yakima have canoe attachment pads, but I'm worried there is not enough room with the stock rack.
Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

I guess the widest part of a canoe would be half way between each rack, so I guess that might help in fitting the stock rack.

Does anyone have the INNO roof racks? I'm interested in how they perform and look. Do they attach similar to the OEM racks?
Also I'm looking for opinions on either a hard cargo box or a fabric rooftop bag. Which is better and why?
Thanks and sorry for this post as it is my first.

Hi Lindsay,

The folks at REI were able to look it up and Thule's web site has the correct link as long as you make sure it's listing the fixpoint attachments (you don't want to not use them); sorry, no link handy, but it's pretty straightforward as long as you make sure it's using screw-down fixpoints and not some goofy clamp arrangement. Oh, and make SURE you get the regular old square bars - the fancy bars are round, cost more money, and aren't compatible with just about any accessory without spending additional money on adapters, so get the cheap, square bars. And take lots of pictures and post them!

ORSracksdirect.com for $220.xx. Free shipping and they threw in a fairing.
If I went with the black I'd have it already but I decided to hold out for the silver since it'll match my 5. I have to go across the border to pick it up but it's half the price than up here.

Hi all,
I've been contemplating a roof rack. Originally I was just thinking cargo box, but now I might need it to carry a canoe sometimes...
Get a cargo box, and the canoe carrier. The roof rack is just two bars going across the top of your car, what you put on the bars and how you attach it to the bars is up to you. You would only want to have the cargo box on the crossbars when you need it, like for a vacation.
The Thule canoe carrier is model number “579XT Canoe Carrier”, $90 MSRP. $80 at Amazon, and $70 at REI (if you are a member). $81 at the site listed above, before 10% off discount.
And there are also YouTube videos showing the canoe carrier in action, just do a search.
By the way, are people leaving the cross bars on all the time, or only when they need them? On my Honda Accord it takes about five minutes to put the cross bars and on off, but I normally leave them off because I don’t use them on a regular basis, maybe just three or four times per year.

I think I basically have that same setup coming - minus a cargo box at the moment. Thule actually ran low on the fit kit for the 5 and are making more. In a couple of weeks I should have pics. Haven't decided where to tie down the bow and stern lines yet as I haven't really taken a close look under the 5. I know there are tie downs under there that hold the car for transport and those might work.

Be sure to post up some picts of the tinted tails - many of us (me) want to tint the tails.
On the roof racks, how long does it take to put it on or take it off?
Five or ten minutes, or is it really not practical to leave the rails off except for when you need them?

The Inno system I just installed would take 5 minutes to take off and they come with caps to cover the mounts. Pretty awesome system...

10 minutes at most to put the bars/feet on the car. First set-up was 20 minutes. I leave the cross-bars on the feet so that all I have to do is put the feet on.

Okay, well I just learned the biggest downside of the roof rack - I just tried to pull into my garage with the bikes still on top. I posted about it in the roof Mazda5 forum, but it's a definite downside - you have to remember the bikes are up there. Hopefully the fixpoints aren't too expensive to replace...

problem w/ any car is driver error.
don't know if they still make it, but years ago, yakima made this little magnetic flip up 'sign' that stuck to the hood; wind at speed keeps it down, and when speed slows, it would 'pop up' saying you had bikes on the roof!
I used to work in a bike shop, we repaired/replaced lots of bikes left on roof racks!

Is there any place online that sells the original Mazda racks? How much do they go for?
I'm debating whether or not to go for the original Mazda branded rack, or the Thule Podium 460 system that ORSracks recommended.
Also, I see a lot of talk about Thule and Yakima cargo boxes, but even the "cheap" ones are $200-300!
What about those cheapo sears boxes for under $200? Is there a reason nobody wants to use those? I'm trying to add a little extra storage without adding too much cost to my recent purchase of the vehicle...

That IS cool, but I think hanging a sign or tennis ball on a 3' rope from the top of the garage door would work fine too. When the door opens, it would swing around in your view, cost effective too :)
