I found one. However i might need someone to pick it up for me to send to DG for molding

*orginial post*

Does anyone else think the wind splitter is really nice?

or

http://www.modacar.com/images/cars/mazdaprotege.jpg

Its for the 2003.5 mazdspeed. but i'm sure it will fit the 2003 no problem.

now the bad new its costs $1020 from corksport.

So here is my plan.
1. Find someone with this piece ask them pay them $100 to let DG to make a mold of it for replicas.
or
2. Email the companies who race the Protege in the World Speed Challenge and bag them to let me borrow, buy or rent the piece to make a replica of it. *doubtful* worth a try
or
3. still working on soultion 3

Does anyone else like this piece. give me some feed back before i start working on this.

Keep in mind that this is a function piece. It reduces lift on the front end at high speeds, creates down force on the front wheels and it channels more air to the raditor and intercoolers.

I love the look of that lip, which is the reason I did the custom lip that I did do. I sure as hell wasnt about to fork over $1,000+ for that...

Here's my cheaper and cleaner solution to my wants...lol

Sorry about the old ass pics, but they are the best ones of the lip I have.

once again i'm not looking for a lip. My 2003.5 already has a lip. I want this for the front wind splitter. Its functional not just looks.

Dexter are u talking about Boosted Orange's lips or the front wind splitter

Dexter
08-02-2005, 09:24 PM
im talkin about the boosted orange lip.

Also, i think that:
generic fg or cf splitter + garden edging + silicone RTV + screws = world challenge windsplitter

the world challenge cars have more than just a splitter. it runs underneath the front of the car, under the engine, etc. that's why its so expensive.

Ya i know, whatever that piece is i want to make a replica of it. because we all know that this piece could be cheaper. Besides i'm more intrested in getting more air into the raditor and SMIC

^^ um, that's cool, except it would make changing your oil a real pain

Acutally i can't really go that far back because i remember reading hte specs on the WSC protege. and one used a Dry Sump system while the other used a Wet Sump system with the stock oil pan IIRC. So that means the front end wind splitter didn't go as far as u think or the piece had to come off each time they did an oil change which didn't make a whole lot of sense to me

CorkSport
08-02-2005, 09:40 PM
It goes back to the front of the tires. Just enough room to change the oil.

Good looking out. IMO, this piece is a bit overkill for a street car/ stockish speed. Though it does look hot, but I think its more the rest of the car setting it off also. But its still a new lip, which is a step in the right direction.

I bought Cunningham Rods that came off a world speed challenge protege. Anyone have more info on these engines? I talked to Cunningham and they made a specific batch for them... sweet looking rods, but I never got specs on the engines in those. They look like they got hot... I will take pics of the bearings sometime and start a thread for opinion. Anyway... anyone have some specs? Thanks

Sorry for the jack.

Blunt

Not so blunt - Looks like this splitter sticks out further and mounts further under the lip. I could be crazy.

also think too, the sport compact car magazine sentra who competes in the same class of racing i think uses an undertray kinda like that but its so strong that it can take a direct hit and not hurt the oil pan, the guys even jump up and down on it when they test suspension settings. this lip/tray might be the same way which is why its so expensive. honeycombing carbon fiber isnt easy or cheap.

Sorry to bring this back from the dead, but I'm going to be contacting APR about the deminsions of some of their splitters to see if i can retrofit one onto my car, and i'm talking to some local companies about producing a underbody front and rear pan to smooth airflow underneath the car and attach onto the APR front splitter.

Just thought i'd let you boys know.

nope... i know for a fact it isnt stable at higher speeds. Felt much too twitchy and not planted enough for my liking. More downforce is definatly needed, and to get that extra top speed a smoother underbody would help a lot.

I got this email from APR. Anyone got any extra time on their hands so they could send this out to them?

Thank you for contacting APR PERFORMANCE.
Currently, APR does not have the requested application Splitter.
But, we would be able to custom make one.
For us to custom make a splitter, we will need a bumper shape template.

First, use a large sheets of paper or cardboard, place underneath the front
bumper.
Draw the bumper bottom outline. The outline should be from the front to the
back.

When you are finished it should look like a "D" shape.
Fold it up then send to us.

Please include your contact information.

Cost for custom splitter; $305+ shipping
Estimated working time; 7 days.

*2 supporting rods can be bolt on to the side of center opening.

Sincerely,
TEAM APR

I will be heading down to Charlotte, NC to meet with Chris Tindol of Tindol Motorsports. I can find out from him how much their splitter wouild cost. Here is his last couple of e-mails to me.

marlon,

75 Members!!!Wow this is going to be a GREAT turnout. I'm in the midst of putting a pkg together for the dealer you mentioned.. Please when you come to the shop bring some club lettering so we can install them on the cars. The only outing sofar for me will be the 24 hours of daytona(helping Max crawford with their 3 car assult on the victory. keep in touch and Please plan on stopping by and we will also look in our bag of tricks for the protege. We have a prototype Ptotege here with a turbo!! Can't wait to show ya.

Chris

If you guys have any other questions, I will be happy to ask him as he is very receptive to Mazda Owners. Also, I have been in contact with Jim Davis of Protomotive and also the guys at Tri-Point as well. If you need me to ask them questions as well, I will do so as they are meeting the members of a couple of Mazda 6 clubs that I belong to @ the Speed World Challenge Event at Mid-Ohio.

I will ask all three about the windsplitters on their Protege's.

Not a bad price, I wonder how much of a GB discount we could get.

Yeah that's really not that bad. If they made this for the P5 I would be all over it, it looks AMAZING.

$305+shipping isn't that bad of a price for a custom carbon piece. gotta figure out far the splitter needs to extend past the front bumper to actually make it functional enough to jsutify the money though....

Those paint schemes are pretty sweet. Anyone know what kind of wheels there running? I def like the lips there using but I couldn't see myself putting one on my speed as a stockish looking car.

Here is a response from Chris Tindol in regards to the splitter, tires, wheels and suspension.

Hey Marlon,

Sorry I just got into the computer and got into my mail. The splitter on one of our race cars or the factory lip that fits on the bottom of the front air dam? The spltter is the carbon piece that has a 3 inch black fence (vertical) around the front edge and the a horozontal carbon plank that is .5 inch thick honey comb. This hor. part goes back to mid axel under the car. The splitter also has vents for ducting to the tranny or brakes.
Tires and wheels for the protege are the same we run on the 6. I think they are 17x8 48mm offset. We have OZ supper leggra and SSR comp. Our issues with fitment is to clear our calipers. I'm in the process of up fitting a street car 6 with our race suspenision. This would give a guy full adj. range that he may not have with factory settings. This can be done. What do you think the interest would be like? When you visit I'll show you I think you will like the look of it.

Let me know what parts if any the guys are interested in for the proteges. We could do the same for the suspension on that car also.

Chris

If you have any interest in please let me know and I will let him know, again I will be at his shop on February 18.

when i had the speedzone lip WITH my car slammed it was like 3 or 4 inches off the ground, and to tell you the truth it really wasn't that bad.

I wouldn't reccomend running the SWC lip on the street for anyone who wants it to stay pretty. Honeycomb+a few layers of pre-preg don't handle impacts well. Trust me

I still want one for the track though :)

PICS: Impact damage(bondo'd and painted). 4 layers of ppc, 1/4" honeycomb, 2mph and a brick wall. The car was BARELY moving and the endplate was destroyed. It can handle 60mph cone impacts(600N+ of force) but anything harder than a cone is bad. Just so you know it won't be pretty after daily driving with a SWC splitter....

I will be at his shop this Saturday morning, I know that they ran 5 Proteges at the last SWC event @ Laguna Seca, in addition to the 6 they entered. They were trying to win the MFG. Championship.

They will run 2 6's and the Proteges every so often. Chris Tindol is pretty cool, if you ever want to see his operation, just e-mail or call him, he is very accessable and interested in helping out both the Protege and 6 communities.

The skylines GTRs have a underbody tray and a little trap door to make oil changes a breeze.

I say it can be cheap if its nto carbon fiber.

Here are some pics of the Splitter and some of the 6's and Protege's that Tindol Motosports will be running in the SWC TC races. As far as the splitter, the cost of his is $2200 dollars and requires special mounting brackets and hardware.

He has no issues, letting another company produce one and using his as a mold. Also, he will be providing me with a list of items that he will be willing to sale to our members. He is going to contact Brembo and see how low we can get their new big brake kit, see pics.

I will continue to update and add pics of my visit with Chris Tindol. Again, he is more than willing to work with us and help us out.
