View Full Version : I killed my motor

A week ago a fellow board member and I installed an aftermarket SS radiator hose. Early this morning while I was dragging ass into work it apparentlly popped off. By the time I snapped to notice my temp. gauge it was too late. The head was blown. Now I'm going to do a complete motor swap. What a great way to spend $2500.

You must hate money if you are willing to pay $2500 for a motor swap. Disregard this if you are going forged, but I did a complete swap when I blew my motor. Parts $775, labor $400.

But did it come with a 5yr 30k wty? I don't think it's a bad deal. Plus this is a new (or I should shy rebuilt) engine. I'm trying to talk him in to going forged but he wont listen AS USUALLLL!

um,thats not true^^^^
a engine from mazda costs 2300 for a short block
or a good used from a junker is around $2000 long block.
and I would never do a shop at my shop for $400,if I did,we would go out of bussiness
espcially if we were rebuilding it.

My long block costs $700 plus shipping from a reputable junkyard (if that is possible). I basically only came with a turn-key warranty. But that is all I needed. Mileage was low too at only 30k miles. It was in great condition and runs perfectly. Yeah, I shouldn't have included the labor in that post, it was done by a local guy who works at a place that tunes race engines. He does it on the side for extra money. But you can't beat 6 hours for a complete swap.
I'm just trying to show the guy he doesn't need to pay that much, if money wasn't an issue for us then we wouldn't be driving Proteges.

yes,but you are a example of lucky more then anything.sometimes you can't get deals like that.
I know of a place you can get a MSP engine(has all the turbo components)the only thing it would be missing would be intercooler/pipes,intake,and a MSP ECU for $2200
they usually only have like 20-35,000 miles on them

so you must not have seen the GIANT PLUME OF STEAM that usualy comes when you pop a radiator hose? even if you were going fast it would have looked like your car was blowing assloads of smoke from the tail pipe. Also there is also the strong smell of coolant that would have been pouring into the car. This can all be summed up as a very stupid mistake.

There is usually no reason to not buy a used motor, most are undamaged in a rear collision.

And for everyone ells, carparts.com is pricing all of their motors at a 1000, by the time you ship it and have it installed you would be looking at well over 2500 plus no warranty. So how is it dumb to buy a new motor with a 30k/5yr on it?
Now if some one really wants to help a guy out we could use a good head for a few 100 bucks. He could put that on and only be spending 300 for labor. If after the head is on and they find out the rings are bad then he'll have to rebuild the bottom end. While doing that he could go forged at that time.
See thats the kind of help people look for on a forum, not some sarcastic shithead remarks.

You know you could get a 170hp FSZE jdm motor for less then 1k.
http://www.noyanusa.com/
"Derrick from Corksport tells us that the best way to achieve flight is through a FSZE high-compression, non-turbo engine swap. This is the engine found in the Japan-only Sport 20, the factory hot rod version of the Protegé (called Familia in Japan). The turbo engine would certainly be intense but requires a transmission swap and numerous other changes. However, the FSZE engine will slip nicely into the Mazda engine bay with minimal technical difficulties and still achieve 170hp. The addition of headers, exhaust, intake, and computer mapping would raise the bar even more. From here, just look on the Corksport site for a detailed list of offerings to help complete the transformation of your ’01 Protegé into something remarkably similar to the Sport 20 sedan or Familia S wagon."
Aricjm15
08-03-2005, 10:01 AM
the FSZE will not make 170hp out of the box in a US protege. Is it so bad that I dont feel bad for someone that didnt do a job correctly on their car? Didnt check their gauges while driving? All in all this could have been avoided had he checked the hose to make sure is was on correctly.

Assuming hes a mechanic with time to waist, well we all know what ASSuming get you.
Your also assuming that these engines dont need rebuilt. How long did they sit, were they stored properly (it doesn't look like it)?
Not all people are willing to put there faith in a used engine. To be people that buy a used engine and do not rebuild it befor they install it are asking for trouble.

It doesn't take a mechanic to replace a motor. The new motor will go in the exact same as the old. Hell, the second motor I've replaced was a swap in a civic. Just use a digital camera to know where everything went and label stuff. I think a P5 motor could be replaced and be done with under $800 including fluids....

I've already addressed the MAM. Not only is it a shortblock it also says there is alot of other work that needs to be done to the car and ecu to make it work. Money and time is the enemy here, he doesn't have much of either one.
I don't know why this has become a which is better new or used but like I said before, 2500 for a new motor with 50k/5yr warranty (i was wrong before and said 30k) installed is a good price. To each his owe, if you want to take a chance on a used engine go right ahead. Yes people have done it before. But the only way I would ever go used is if I new the engine or if I had the money to rebuild it with forged parts. Other then that a warrantied engine beats a used cheap one any day in my book.

Now see this is the type of info that is needed. I know this place and yes they are good. I thought he called them. I just got off the phone with them and they have one for 800 with 90 day warranty and sell ext warranties (unlimited parts and labor for 300). And they are local.
Thanks
it is kinda funny how hung up on the warranty people are. a warranty does not insure that it will not break, it just means they will fix it if it does.... right... how often do companies/dealers try and snake out of warranty claims!
still, going new has better odds than used if you don't want to take the chance
just my thoughts

A warranty is NOT a guarantee that your motor will be good. It is dependent on conditions in which they can randomly set. I'd have more faith in a motor at around 15,000-40,000 miles than a new one because I know it's already broken in and free of manufacturer defects that the warranty "might" cover. And yes, I have put my money where my mouth is and rebuilt a motor and put it in my personal daily driver.

most used engine places give you a warrenty that the engine will start.
Hughes412
08-03-2005, 02:35 PM
And a lot of used engine places will put a sealint (?) and other additives in it so to insure it runs past the 90 days.
I've never had a problem with a dealer (of any kind) doing warranty work on my car. I know what to do how far to go and treat them with respect when I talk to them. In return I get my stuff fixed. Like my clutch replaced under warranty after the 12k warranty ran out and the mods on it.
new is better unless something like this 800.00 dollar engine comes along. If he can save 3-1000 the the used is the way to go.
