Hi, names john. My brother just bought a 2002 Protege5 with 49k on it for $12k out the door from a local dealer. Has a minor fraction of the warranty left, plus the add-on warranty the dealer gives.
Did a lot of research before buying. we were comparing it to a 1999 Subaru Forester for $9450 with 44k miles! (safety is a big issue.)
Let me get this clear, my father bought the car for my brother, Bobby, aka mamba on here. However, i am sure i will be posting on here more often than him....as this is the car i have wanted since it came out...However i ended up gettting a 2001 honda prelude (note the name, :p )
We are going to pick it up from the dealer today. So far what i know to look/listen for is a loose screw from the butterfly valve......and check the swaybar endlinks.
anyone got anything else? thanks
I will be leaving here in about 30mins to go get the car from the dealer. we paid for it yesterday, but the radio fuse was blown (meaning no interior lights, no instrument lights) and the keyfob needed a new battery. plus it needed to be detailed and stuff, and we didnt feel like waiting.
I will try and post some pics, as sson as we get the car here!

welcome to the board john,
brother made a good choice on the P5. lots of good info on the forum. use the search option in the upper tool-bar and you will find loads of info on request......

o far what i know to look/listen for is a loose screw from the butterfly valve......and check the swaybar endlinks.
you will hear a loud banging sound in the suspension if you end-links are gone and the screw in the intake system is a small problem that few people have had......
well, enjoy the forum.....

Also....jdm is to honda as what is to mazda? I mean, i know they are made in japan, but are those the parts people want? I saw the rear tailights with the foglight, is that it?

hey man welcome to the boards, your bro made a nice choice, i have owned an 02 p-5 since oct 01, not a day goes by that i dont love driving it.
that intake butterfly screw prob was mostly on 03's as far as i have read anyway, i dont think i have heard or read anything about the 02's having that prob,
word to the wise ....if the car has dunlop tires on it, get rid of em before the car goes into the ditch, on a rainy day....

Prelude = Way more fun.
There is JDM stuff for P5's. I used to have the JDM tail lights, which were worth every dollar, the stock tails look like shit. Check out corksport.com. Also, try to feel for clutch chatter when you test drive the 02 P5. It'll feel like wheel hop when you engage the clutch.

Congratulations on the whip.

Welcome to the forums, hope you both enjoy the P5. Check to make sure the A/C works in all positions. Give the brakes a good firm run too.

just for the record.. i had a 98 prelude and it was by far my favorite car. It had a AEM CAI and Greddy exhaust and I beat a lot of v8 mustangs with that car... i know a mustang isn't much to compare it too... but i rarely lost.

Yeah, definitely lose the Dunlops! It rained like hell the day I brought mine home and I was lucky to drive at 40mph without going all over the road. I just pulled over and let the storm win. Not a problem with the Proxes4 now. I'd say anything is better than the factory tires. Your brother made a good choice and if he's happy with the price, he'll be more than happy with the car.

Nearly 200hp stock. It was the 2nd last gen one. Something like 135'ish+ mph top speed.
I had a hard time staying with a modded one on the track. He was running R compounds though.
The last gen ones I don't think that I could keep up with. Never had the opportunity on the track.

thanks yall.. and no, there is no rice coming. I phrased that sentance wrong.
Tell me if you think my prelude is rice....i really dont care though. lol
Mugen body kit. <---looks stock
OEM CF Hood <----will be painted to match soon
Lowered....not slammed.
JDM foglights
Mugen thermostat
Mugen radiator cap
Mugen fan switch
Stock everything else.
I prefer mugen and JDM parts because they are clean and oem style quality. Do you mazdas have parts available that are similiar? make more sense?
And dont predict my future (butt) j/k :p
I love that smiley.....

The 5th gen, was slower than the 4th gen. Weight ratio.
welcome to the board.
we got the same deals, except instead of mugen it is mazdaspeed japan or autoexe japan that make the quality (and VERY expensive) parts.
your lude sounds clean/simple which is good imo. my friend has a lude, ww lip kit, 18' c5s, n1 exhaust, and a drop. simple yet smooth.

Whats wrong with the lude? Does trapping in the 90's mph bone stock with no turbo offend you? :)

I can vouch for this. Dunlops are horrible. $8000 later...

I didn't think the Dunlops were that bad. I got 35k out of them down to the steel belts. Although I like the Yokahama ES100's better.

they suck in the snow, but otherwise no huge complaints about'em. They saved my rim from destruction, so I'm happy about that.

Not to hijack your threat, but I got one this weekend as well. Took lots of prodding to get the dealer down to where I wanted, but I did and bought the car. It's an '03 with almost 27k on it, 5 speed, leather, cruise, etc. I doesn't have ABS, though. I wish it did, but the other options out weighed not having ABS, so I got it. Link to my homepage has a couple pics. Enjoy!
