Does anyone know about any problems with putting 18" rims on my mazda 3s?

shouldn't be any, if you are lowering your car as well as putting on 18s (generally 7 or wider) i would make sure you have an offset of at least +45mm bigger if you can find it... otherwise just match your overall outside diameter (od) with your stock wheel/tire set up (so your speedometer will be correct) and you will be fine...
since stock size is 205/50/17, go with a 205 or 215/40/18 and you should be fine

205/40-18 would be too small. If you go with a 205, it will have to be a 45 profile. There's no 215 that is the right size but a 215/40 is closer than a 215/45.
If you want to go with a wider tire, the best bet is a 225/40-18. That's exactly the same diameter as a 205/50-17.

yeah those are the same. they fit snug, well except for the negative camber...
