Are they much better than other types of wheels? Lighter? Stronger?
Do they always cost a fortune?

i think it's just an appearance thing, but i'm not sure. they're always pretty expensive though. but it does give a pretty cool look to the wheel though.

3 piece wheels are cast or forged in 3 pieces and then put together (bolts/rivets/blah).
Go to HRE's website, they will prolly have some good diagrams.
IIRC its the rim (the outside where the tire bead sits) as two pieces (inside and out) then the face or spokes whatever you want to call it.
They are more customizable for different applications that way.

they are usually heavier but stronger than a one piece wheel.
