Need help automatic transmission stuck

The car is a 98 Protege Se with an automatic transmission and a 1.8 motor. For sometime the shift lever was hard to shift, then one day when my father took the car the lever just started moving freely without changing any gears. The car was stuck in nuetral, when I took apart some of the interior I saw that the transmission cable was snapped. I romoved the cable and got a new one, but I don't think that is the end of my problems because the gear selector, ( right of the engine ) is still very hard to move. Any way too make that gear selector move easier? Any help would be great, thanks in advance.

My 98 ES 1.8 auto has the same problem, but mainly because it sits for most of the week. What I do is just let the car warm up for at least 2 mins, then with my foot FIRMLY on the brakes, I move the selecta from P to low gear and back. after that it starts to act right. I think i need to get the tranny flushed, but i'm no expert.
