So the other day I was driving my 2003 Protege ES and listening to the 6 disc in dash CD changer (rather loud, I should add). All of a suddon, boom... no sound. The disc wasn't skipping, it was playing and when i switched CD's, turned on the radio and adjusted every setting I could find, I still could not get any sound.

Could I have blown out my speakers? Bad connection? Something come loose?

Any suggestions?

i HIGHLY doubt all the speakers would have gone at once. I am guessing something happened with a connection somewhere. CHeck out the back of the deck, probvably something there

Could it be a fuse?

Could it be a fuse?
If all your equipment is on its probably not a fuse.

Is all your stereo equipment stock??

most likely one of the wires in the back of the head unit.

I have a similar problem with mine (aftermarket HU) but I dont lose sound completely.
Few days ago (when it was friggin' hot outside) was driving from work, and was playing music rather loud. All of a sudden I nottice that my volume decreased by at least a half and when I started slowing down, volume would come back up.......dunno wtf. That happened only 2 days in a row, only when it was boiling hot outside.

So, my car wouldn't start this morning. Has to be an electrical system problem now. I got it jumped and it started, but I've been getting weird feedback from my speakers and the stock anti theft system went off a few times while the car was off and waiting to be jumped (although not at full volume).

Hmmph!

If your car is under warranty I wouldnt hesitate to take it to the dealer you bought it from.

Everything was working fine till yesterday when i turned on CD player and there was NO SOUND AT ALL! I switched to Radio - No Sound!
Everything seems to be OK on the LCD display, but no sound.

Called Mazda, they offered a replacement unit for $349.00 +TAX CDN

Pulled out the unit, checked (visually) capacitors, connections, etc - looks OK. Any ideas?

Here's the scoop on my Protege radio...

I took it to a Mazda dealer, not the one I bought it from but a Mazda dealer nonetheless... my care barely has under 50k miles so I figured the warranty would take care of it.

I had the exact same problem as you nfsp, with my stock stereo (it's the 6 cd in dash player). They told me that the radio is bad and that I need a new one. So they ordered a replacement at no cost under warranty.

So the new radio comes in, they install it for me and the car works fine now... but the new stereo is fucked up! It does that volume gets loud and volume gets low randomly and I can't control it once the car is started.

They ordered ANOTHER radio, still under warranty. We'll see what happens. I'm not paying anything, so I can't complain. If anything happens once I hit 50K, I'll have to go the aftermarket CD route, but I like the stock CD changer.
