Where can you find a lower temp thermastat for proteges?? The msp engine runs super hot and front mount intercooler makes it even worse. Hot cylinder temps leads to detonation problems.
would like to know as well.

The 180 OEM is happy medium. You might want to get an electric fan set up. Running a 160 will hurt your gas mileage and make the car run richer. Thats what I always heard in fuel injected applications. $90 is way too much for a thermostat.

Only if the car stays in warm up mode will it hurt emissions and gas milage. We can all agree that the msp has its radiator fan constaly on so everyone should benifit from a cooler engine temp. Also people running a front mount would definitly benefit from this. Hot cylinder temps with higher boost can cause detonation on cylinder 2 or 3. Also it doesn't help that the FS motor is a iron block and does not dissapate heat like an aluminum block.

Running a 160 can also increase the wear on your engine parts. Its your call, but I wouldn't do it. If you have an FMIC, then it would be wise to get an auxillary electric fan set up because of the decreased cooling. Optimum coolant temperature for performance and longevity is 175-180, so the OEM 180 is just right for that. Especially on the stock PCM. Just my opinion.

So are you saying the stock thermostat in our cars is set at 180?

yes.
But i believe a member on here recorded 220 degree temps with the highboost intercoooler. Which is pretty dangerous with higher boost and cause detonation and loss of power because the knock sensor will pull timing. With a lower thermastat car would run about 190-200 which is the optimal temp. Engine damage only happens when the temps are lower then 160 and the oil sluges up. I can confidently say that the msp with its weak radiator and super hot engine bay temps would have that problems, espeically with higher boost.
my temp gauge is lower since in installed my fmic

technically impossible since the fmic is blocking airflow to the radiator. The cooler air going in to the combustion camber would not affect the temp gauge much.
