Because he will look cooler in front of his friends.
really... people.... who cares if your car is auto... i bought auto because thats what i wanted fo rtthis car... i am not modding the hell out of my car for speed... just mkaing it look and feel nicer for myself.. if i wanted a TRUE sports car and got a real 5 or 6 speed... then go for a stang, camaro, firehawk.. vette.... the auto is great.
come on people....
not to mention... maybe not yourself, but i am sick of the people who say... 'oh i had to get auto becuase of my mom' or 'i know im stupid bhut i bought auto'...quit making ex uses, you either bought it becuase its more practical for you or you dont know how to drive stick very well.
GOD.. the auto is nice.
anyway, byebye

damnn sorry it was just a question the thing is i bought the auto thinking it would be best, more comfortable instead of always shifting gears then the need for speed catched up to me so i now regret my decision, so therefore i aint making excuses im just asking for help ,,,, could anybody pleasseeee tell me how much it would cost?? thankx sorry for the bothering i guess..
basically a few thousand dollars... not sure the exact amount. By the way, the auto is just as fast as the manual, but slower off the line. Plus if you actually want to race your car, i suggest a better clutch than the OEM... it will eventually break on you. You could even try modding your auto... intake and exhaust give more speed then you would realize. Both of those together are less than a grand.. plus you could add new plugs, wires, that still leave you with more money left over than switching to manual.

Very interesting. Things are much different on a few other sites i visit. Glad to see that their are many people who really do back the automatic! :)

I drive an automatic (sportshift) and really the only difference is no clutch and 1 less gear. 1st and 2nd gear really aren't that long with the SportShift and you can launch by revving in neutral and throwing it down to drive. :D Myabe not healthy for the car, but you launch pretty well.

"if i wanted a TRUE sports car and got a real 5 or 6 speed... then go for a stang, camaro, firehawk.. vette.... the auto is great."
Lol, sorry i would not choose any of those cars (except the Corvette), i would rather go for a 3000GT VR-4 twin turbo with all wheel drive and all wheel steering, or a Supra, or Rx-7, RSX- type S, or a skyline, i would go with a 6-speed too of course.
whatever... you know what i meant. proteges are economy cars... not sports cars....
I believe that an economy car such as ours specially benefits from a manual tranny, we don't have a lot of hp so why waste some of it with an auto tranny? you also have the fun factor you get from a manual tranny.
But if you like auto trannies fine, it's your car and you're the one that has to be happy with it, that's all that matters:).

JAC has a good point about the auto tranny zapping more power away from our underpowered engines than a manual tranny will. The rule of thumb is about 25% of power is spent just on the automatic transmission. With a few automatic tranny upgrades though you can at least cut the power loss in half :)
As for the "fun factor"
:bs:
Thats like saying, "I like manual windows over power ones because it feels like I have more control over putting my windows up and down"

I really wish my car was not an automatic. I didnt know how to drive stick before thats why i bought it. I put the ingen cai and exaust with 2 and a quarter inch piping. I lost a race to a stock protege 5 that was stick. the mods really dont make a difference.

ZiO is right... its nice! Well we got the Auto sport so the wife can drive it in auto mode and I use the manual mode hehe
I didn't know how to drive stick either, I just knew the "theory", but regardless of that I decided to get my new car with a 5speed, it took me about 30 min to get the hang of it and 4 months later I'm shifting like a pro :D.
I'm so glad I decided to get the 5 speed instead of the auto.

ok now that was just stupid. sorry to say. i don't know about you but down shifting and hitting a turn is fun. also it's FUN to get on a highway and go threw the gears. what not fun is just stepping on the gas to make the car go. As to the whole "having more controll of the car" thing, take your car and try to AutoX witha auto. you would have a horrible time b/c the auto trany and lack of gear controll. There is nothing wrong with getting a auto. It comes down to what you want. end of story.

I just get angry when people make it sound like automatic transmission owners don't have fun driving their cars. There is more to driving an automatic than "stepping on the gas to make the car go". Good braketorquing technique is needed for a good launch when drag racing. Knowing when to use 1st, 2nd, Drive, or Overdrive for the best effect is important. Finding ways to modify the line pressure for faster firmer shifts such as the IAT modification helps to better understand and control the automatic transmission to your liking.
I agree it comes down to personal preference, heck I want to own both manual transmissions and automatics. Stock for stock on most cars, a manual transmission will be quicker than an automatic, even an automatic with a few mods compared to a stock manual. This is based on the ineffiency the stock automatic transmission (usually 25% of drivetrain loss) verus the limited drivetrain loss of the manual transmission. Regardless, to say that a manual transmission equiped vechicle is more FUN than an automatic just shows that are being very narrowminded or are just uninformed, and I feel insulted.

that fair enough to say. Just like to add one last thing. if you have two indentical cars one stick and one auto an auto will beat a stick car in the quater mile if the auto tranny is tunned right. It still remians that a computer will shift faster and better then most humans!
but i still like stick. it's fun! :D
I depends on the person, but IMHO driving a car with a 5speed is much more fun than a car with an auto and before you start calling me uninformed or narrowminded, it's not like I've been driving cars with manual trannies all my life and therefor I'm biassed. In fact I learned how to drive in an automatic, my whole family drives automatics and most of them don't even know how to drive stick, even my first car was an auto.
I got my new car 5 months ago (5speed) and I'm never going back to auto. If you're serious about getting the most out of your car performance wise then manual is the way to go, if you can't accept that then I believe that you are the narrowminded one here.
You have fun driving cars with auto trannies, there's nothing wrong with that, but if you like to have "control" over your car then why get an automatic? I don't think that's what they're meant for.

Hey ChargerGL,
Whats this trans line pressure mod for firmer shifts? I was thinking about what shift performance mods can be made and if the transmissions have an accumulator spring that can be removed for harder shifts.
I drove a stick in my old car for ten years and live in the city. Its not that fun for me anymore so I bought the automatic Protege5 and find it relaxing to drive day in and day out in city traffic.
The manual O/D lockout mode is great on twisty roads and holds the gear just fine at speed.
