yeah so I just got a phone call from Sportcompactpro.com about an application that I filled out for a sponsorship about 2 months ago. "Jack" told me that I had gotten preapproved yesterday for a sponsorship. But that I had to verify my credit card number with him so that I could pay $79 for the application to go through to his legal department and have them send it out to me. Now I dunno if I was on the edge of a scam or if I just passed up something that I will regret in the future...He told me he would be comin through South Carolina in November or December to shoot an import DVD. He also said that I would receive the full $79 that I paid and get $10 for every minute that I was in the DVD. Oh and somethin about having a full sponsorship after a year. This is kinda pissin me off though. What do you guys think about this shit?

I looked into one place that offered to find sponsorships for you. I ended up canceling because it seemed like a big scam to me. Those are not even real sponsorships if you think about it.
I've gone about sponsorships the old fashion way and been the most effective. I have a stand-alone website that's on a CD that I mail to different companies with a letter describing what I do and what I can do. All professional grade stuff. I'd post it here for you to look at, but there's a lot of personal information on it. :-/
Protegegarage should sponsor me one of those in-car PC's. ;) :P

definitely a scan dude. Sad part is they get people to do that all the time :(
bummer! If this indeed is a scam, I cant beleive that SPORTCOMPACTPRO actually does that. OMG, lol, they must be desparate!
Plus, its a really smart idea to NOT to give out your personal info including Credit card #s OVER the phone. When I hear somebody asking me to verify my id with SS# or CC#, I say, "ok here it is.........oh Im really sorry but can you hold on for 2 seconds? I got somebody on the 2nd line" and put them on MUTE for like 3-5 minutes! haha its funny that I can hear them saying stuff, and cursing in some rare cases!!! (rofl) then once I see that they are to the point of being pissed off, I switch back to them and say, ok here is my CC#......CLICK! haha hang up on their asses. I hate telemarketers and scammers!

Why do you say that? That's how most mail-order orders are done.

really? Sorry man I wasnt aware of how sponsorship applications operate(dunno) . But my point was that saying personal info like ss# or CC# over the phone is just beyond for me....never know who else is listening.

If you can't see them face to face then that kind of sponsorship might not be worth it.
Otherwise they'd have to be a really well known company for me to consider sponsorship with online or by mail.

yeah on full sponsorships you usually meet with the company or atleast one of their distributors, look over contracts for shows to work or compete in and then you get full sponsorship without paying a dime... that's mostly the reason I said no to it cause he wanted $79 to get my contract to the "lawyers" and then back to me

I wasn't talking about sponsorship applications. Mail order sales in general. That's how the companies get payment info every single day. People give their information over the phone to place the order. 95% of the orders I take at work are done over the phone, and done with a credit/debit. No one will EVER require a SS# however.
As for sponsorships directly with a company... Sometimes they do require payment info. This is in case you do not live up to your end of the agreement.

pay me $80, i'll send you all the decals i've gotten from buying shit over the years... i have a good pile of them.
When I come down and drive through the states, every full minute you're in my DVD of travels, you'll get $100. Of course if you appear in 10 45seconds shots, you get nothing
sound like a deal?
*this was just to stress the point that the phone call you got was a scam...
HorsepowerFreak gotcha (wink)
the only reason why I brought up ss# is just an example, not neseserally sponsorship companies but giving out info over the phone in general.
Regarding passing over the cc# over the phone...I guess it just deppends who you buy from. I mean, if company has a really good reputation then yea. Just like with SPD-racing. When I ordered something from Chris I gave him my cc# over the phone, but only because I knew that I was dealing with good people, hehe.
Hope you'll find a better sponsor (thumb)
