My msp is knocking between 3000rpm and 4000rpm. I was runnin about 12lbs of boost when i started to hear it. I pulled over and noticed that the serpintine belt had slipped one notch of the top pully. has any one seen this? any ideas???????? Im not driving it and I dont know my MSP tech at Mazda to well so i want to see if anyone might now a solution. i havent had a chance to pull the plugs to check for detonation.

My MODS custom 3 inch front mount intercooler, AEM CAI, greddy prospec type B Boost Controller, Greddy turbo timer.

the protege motor can handle 10 pounds of boost, after that, things begin to break (rods r usually first to go)

if you really wanna boost that high, look into beefing the internals up a bit

just my 0.02 cents

THe belt I can't explain, but the knocking I have seen before.

12 lbs? Even with a FMIC, aren't you pushing it a little? I am not an engine block expert and by all means someone chime in, but it sounds like you might have bent a rod.

yea knocking isnt good(obviously), sounds like a bent rod, lower the boost to stock setting, go to the dealer and see what they say...also if you want to boost that high, not only should you have internals, exhaust, dp will help a lot

o yea, you can also do a compression test

all right guys, I know now boosting that high without the proper internals was idiodic. If all your gonna say is "you shouldnt have boosted that high" save your energy BECAUSE I KNOW. Im looking for people with experiance with this problem. Thankyou for your cooperation

The metalic sound that you get under load could be any number of things and its beyond internet analysis. Get a compression test done for starters. Good luck and I hope its nothing major.

If it's a bent rod, you should hear knocking at all rpm's no? Is it still knocking when you turn down the boost? If so, then it's something internal I would guess. Maybe bad gas? Low on oil?

Actually, depending on how hard you run the car I'm guessing, the belt coming off the pully is a common problem. But the only times I've seen this is when you tend to run alot of twisties and racing. But I have seen a few MSP's and P5's that has had this happen to them.

Loosen the pully, adjust the belt and tighten it back up just like nothing happened. But make sure you keep checking this often or it will wreak havoc and cause other problems to occur. Not sure if this is going to cause the knock. But of course, first chance you get, check the plugs and turn down the boost to about 5psi.

wouldnt the pulley falling off cause the timing to be off? then casuing the incorrect fire pattern then causing who knows what? i odnt know...

Yes, it does. Thats why I said that it causes "havoc". There are different types of detonation. There was a thread around here somewhere about it. But thats why you need to check the plugs. A mechanic would be able to help better. And I'm no expert.

im gonna pull the plugs tomorro, check the oil, and put the belt back on correctly. im gonna talk to my mazda speed tech today and see if i can butter him up, maybe he will at least take a look at it and tell what the dilly is. worse case senario, I buy a forged FS engine and $5000 later i have a better motor. Thank god for my winter beater!!!!

Is there any MSP (or similar) owners in the new england area? if so PM me pleeeeeeeeeeeeeese

Thanks for the ideas,

First I would pick up a compression gauge at autozone (15.00) and check it first. That will gove you a general idea of whats going on. Good luck

say goodbye to your rod bearings. mine did the sam thing.

does it knock a lot when you rev it up?

any knock at idle?

is it loud as shit?

a video would be nice.

only knocks at rev, between 2500 and 6000 rpm in first and second gear, no knock at idle and really not that loud, in fact i have to have the hood up or the windows down while im passing a building. As far as video goes, I know about as much about computers as I do space craft, so sending you video is not an option. i didnt catch your mods. what did you end up doing to fix it and about how much did it cost you? if this is to much, PM me. Im thinking of puttin in the wrench time to go back to stock and pawn it on the dealer. i need nuts and bolts and a few hoses, If anyone has them and is willing to part with your hoses and nuts (sounds pretty gay) PM ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I might be willing to trade some Greddy stuff or pay cash. Also I have a custom front mount intercooler with HKS super S BOV already attached if any one is interested PM MEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!! ICE COLD

My car is sitting, and all stock.... what do you need?

I would be willing to trade hoses and shit, but you'd have to take it off my car for me...

Reason being I am in Asia right now...

I was about to mention rod bearings, but I thought it was a static sort of knock and only between 3-4k rpm. If it's knocking when under light load and through a good part of the rev range, a rod bearing or bearings would be my guess. Is it more pronounced when you roll into the throttle a bit?
I haven't lost any on my MSP but I've done it on two other cars over the years. Usually caused by oil starvation or detonation. If it was detonation it will be the upper half of the bearing. The pounding from the detonation will hammer the bearing material and thin it out.

Odds are nothing else is damaged...yet. If you spin one it can gouge the crank and cause even worse things than that. For pete's sake, don't drive it if you think that's a possibility.

Too bad we don't live closer. I'd love the opportunity to swap some parts with you. Good luck, and keep us posted.

I think I will take you up on your offer for your stock parts, PM and let me know how much you want for the hoses and nuts, or what you would want to trade,

I checked the oil and it was bone dry............. oil starvation is my only geuss, has anyone experianced this? I changed it at 11000 and the car only has 13500. I think you hit the nail on the head with your rod bearing prediction. It gets louder as the rpm's increase. Im taking it in some time this week to swap aftermarket with stock.

Yep, dude. Sounds like a rod bearing. =/ Shitty. That's why you should check your oil every five minutes, or every fuel up, whichever comes first. Heh.

There's probably a lot more crap damaged than just the bearings, though. My guess is your rod and main bearings, perhaps the rods themselves, and I'm sure the crank is nicely scorred.

I wouldn't suggest bringing it to Telarico, either, but then, I don't even bother with warranty work; I just do all my own, even if I have a warranty.

At any rate, good luck. Let us know what you find.

So here's the deal,
I get my car back from Mazda and its all kinds of messed up.
first off the A/C died, Completley and its been over 90 every day. then I started to get an exhaust leak. The rocket scientists at mazda decided to leave out a very important gasket. needless to say my car sounds like crap until it heats up and forms a seal. Then i tried to get it inspected at another mazda dealer and they failed it because of the exhaust and becuase its to low. this dealer refused to fix the exhaust saying it was the delaers fault.
mazda sucks................

You have a leaking AC hose. The same thing happened when they replaced my engine, however, they caught it and fixed it before I got my car back. Which exhaust gasket did they forget? If it is not the exhaust manifold gasket, turbo gasket, or s-pipe gasket, then it should be easy to put a new one in.
If I were you, I would take it back to the same dealer and make them replace the AC hose that they screwed up and put in the gasket that they left out. I don't see how they could give you any shit. After you do this, you should find another dealer.

Edit: They don't suck that hard, they just gave both of us new engines. We both know that we could have easily been denied warranty coverage. That dealer's service department is another story.

Your right, im just pissed they failed the inspection and then refused to fix it... lucky for me the receptionist likes me and she didnt charge me $40 for the inspection...

Im not sure where the leak is. i havent had time to dig. its not to loud, and it its only at start up so i assume its at the turbo.

same thing with my A/C to that must be a reaccuring issue with rebuilds.

you couldnt be more right. Its all about kissin a$$ at the dealership to get what you want. they knew i had aftermarket parts, and they still fixed it. they may have done a crappy job, but I still have 6 grand in my pocket so Im gonna shup up right about................................. now
