Just checkin to see what you guys think? im fairly new so please just correct me if i have something on here that dont match please dont bash me (whip) anyways
im wanting to build a motor to handle around 25psi of boost. Im going with forged low compression arias pistons, and a set of eagle H beam rods for starters and ARP bolts.. thats just the short block, what im having trouble on is what turbo to run? i want it to be streetable however i dont want my lag to tear it apart and only give me 1-2K worth of actual boost. id like my motor to start spooling around 2K and hold it to around 7 grand where I will be setting it at with my EMS. now the next problem i have is transmission ive read on here people shred trannys is there any upgrade for these yet? if so it may be my very first upgrade.. I picked up a boneyard 2.0L motor so its not like my car is down for any reason im just wanting to build everything and take a week and install it all and go tune and be done.. but what turbo setup would you guys think if id like to run around 20psi of boost??? sorry for the newbie type questins... Well I could tell you to run a search, because you really need to, but I will spell out the basics for you. More research on your part is your own responsibility.
Forged: CP Pistons, Oliver Rods, or H-Beam Rods from Beau. Call him for more info.
Turbo: GT28RS = More Power, like stock "lag", 350whp possible. GT2871R = More power than 28RS, but slightly more lag, 400whp possible with this turbo.
Rev Band: 7k is too high unless you beef up the valvetrain on the head.
Tranny: Yes, over 300whp you are fucked. Solution are in the works, but no price has been announced.
EMS: Go with MPI, or Microtech if you want to go hard core. DSM AFC is a great way to make lots of HP cheaply, but over 12psi it might become a problem because it lacks timing adjustments. At 10psi, its base map made like 50 ft/lb more than stock and like 40+ more hp.
Now start searching!

Set your goal at 15 psi, then steadily move up. 25psi would spin the tires and be wasted on a FWD car. You are going to spend a lot of $$ to reach your goal. Definately start with a MAM block, GT28RS, new tubular manifold and intercooler, intake, Turbo-back exhaust, port and polish of intake manifold and head, new clutch, MPI or AEM engine management, transmission upgrade, and the list goes on...

yeah your looking at alot of cash, here is what I am doing to get to the 25psi you are talking about, which btw is not a very good way to set your goal, 10psi on a GT25 and 10psi on a GT30 would be very different
MAM shortblock
MAM Sleeper kit 2871R
MAM stage 3 Fuel system
Spec lightweight flywheel
Spec Stage 3 Hybrid clutch
AEM
720 CC injectors
Quaife LSD
Ron Davis Radiator
DSS axles
upgraded head
and hopefully some tranny upgrades, probably the MPI ones
either way your looking at a hell of alot of money

After they tax that 20K it's not going to be 20K anymore (unless you can reenlist in a tax free zone). At least your spending it on something solid. I know guys who blew their re-up bonuses in foreign ports on women and alcohol.

yah when my bonus kicks in ill be in iraq again so i get it all, however ill be overseas's it will kick in in october and ill be half way done with my tour cause ill be there for 6 more months and i should be back in december right before xmas or so they tell me. i leave in 2 weeks so meh lets hope ha ha... im just tryin to decide where to start cause my engine will be sitting waiting for me to pick it up when i get back.
The shop has my motor already and has a down deposit and they know im leaving and i told them my plans so they are gonna build my motor, get a sweet port polish, valve job and upgrade my valves, springs exe and all the good stuff get custom grind cams and cam gears and well basically have a sweet long block when i come home so all i have to do is buy my turbo parts and get a tranny and boom ill be done... im really thinkin about that turbo but im serious about boosting over 20psi.... (rofl)

Id get GT2871R youll never get traction with something that spools faster then this. Well youl never get traction as it is...

save the effort, buy a SB from MPI,or MAM,and stay away from EAGLE rods for high boost, they aren't as good as oliver or PAR rods, and I highly recamend CP pistons.
as far as turbo goes,I recamend the GT2871R,I have the GT28RS wich spools fast, but will run out at that boost,so commensense says next size up.not to mention it will bolt up to the stock main, meaning it will also fit a lot of aftermarket MSP parts.
as far as EMS,most of the high HP proteges on this forum use the MPI tuner, the haltech is nice aswell, but harder to tune.
fuel-secondary injectors for sure, that is unless you like to not be able to idle,or start your car on some days.

awsome guys, so eagle rods arnt the way to go, thats fine, also guys do you think it may be a lot wizer to just lower my boost for traction problems and go to like 15-16psi and just squirt a 50 shot of nitrous or something on top of that when i get some speed so i can traction up?? just currious as that may be a better winner in my book??

Personally I think nitrous is a waste of time. There are a couple EBC's out there that will allow you to set boost per gear, so that could help some.

Might as well go with the thumper instead of the sleeper kit.

I guess, but the sleeper kit can give out plenty of power while still having a decent spool up time. azian6er said he doesn't hit full boost on his thumper kit (and that's only like 13psi for him right now) until either 4k or over 4k, I can't remember. I know it definitely wasn't under 4k though.
