View Full Version : Clutch Wear on MSP

Post your milage when your STOCK clutch started to wear out (Example: 70 MPH on the highway in 5th gear. Floor it and the engine accelerates toward redline without the car going any faster). Post ONLY if your boost is near stock and minimal engine mods or specify if heavily modded to keep a more realistic average for the masses.

I have 32k miles and they told that my clutch has 1/3 of life left.
I guess the guy who had it before killed it.

I am stock too.

About 35K on the odometer when I totaled it.

10K at stock boost, 25K at 9-11 psi with an Injen CAI, Spool hardpipes, and an Apex downpipe with cat.

Ran about 20-25 1/4 mile passes at the track with hard launches.

Beat the crap out of it otherwise.

Was still working like it was new when it was totalled.

39,800 miles, stock boost, awr front motor mount for the last 950 miles, 30-35 passes on the car with semi hard launches and still grabs just fine.

44,083 so far and the clutch has no problems. Seems like the clutch duration varies from car to car as well.

I'm impressed! As far as signs of wear, the 1st post is a sure way to tell but you can also have warpage from overheating it (pulsing in the clutch peddle). Overheating it is when you smell that "YUMMY" odor inside the car that makes you wanna (pukey) !

i glazed mine the other day but after some normal driving it worked like new again.

I have hard time putting into 1st or reverse when I am standing still.

In order to put the gears in smootly I have to accelerate a bit or be in movement.

They told me the clutch may be wearing out.

31000 miles stock but bought it used.

Do you guys have ever experienced that before?

If I change the clutch should I buy a Mazda one or an aftermarket one?

102,000 km before it almost totally went, car is stock. It started slipping around 97,000 km, noticed when i couldnt top 140 km with slipping, by the time i got it to the shop driving up hill was almost impossible. New act 4 puck racing disc and presure plate are quite nice though.

72000 miles and the clutch seems fine to me. it has its moments of high revs in neutral and sometimes it is hard to get in reverse when still but those problems just dont come often just appear every now and then.

Do ihear LSD breakage soon? (peep) Not going into reverse more often was a sign for me.

61k miles and clutch is still there... bought it used.

HOWEVER I have a feeling it might be on its way out? Every once in a while, it will slip in first gear and it takes a little higher rev to get it to grab. its not aproblem I can regularly recreate. I believe its usually after a hard run (trying to think back now). In either event it grabs great otherwise, and I just filled my brake fluid res. back to max and it grabs ALOT better...

I have always had this but I don't have a factory diff anymore. At odd moments it will not want to go into reverse. I can get it to go in by driving forward a bit and then it will go as if nothing had happened.

65K - Slipping when wheels would normally spin (full throttle in 1st and 2nd)
12psi with more mods than in sig for at least the last 12 months

60k hwy miles, 2 seasons autox, clutch still perfect. I pulled out on the hwy the other day and missjudges the traction that was available and the car wandered while the fron wheels roasted but still accellerated fast enough to get a surprised look at a SS camaro that had changed lanes to let me have the right lane only to realize that he did not need to. (ughdance)

FYI I also have trouble getting into reverse sometimes and I think its just a gear alighment thing. Letting the car roll even just a centimeter or two allows it to get in gear. Also, this issue got worse when I put the AWR mounts in and shifter bushing. I think the soft stock mounts allow the engine and assy move just enough to allow to get into gear.

replaced mine this weekend, it was doing ok so far. 60K with almost 30K around 200whp. Clutch was fine I just had to fix a leak and didn't want to pull tranny again for awhile. Put in a nice 6 puck ceramic custom Exedy and rewound PP. Taking some getting used to during the break in. Pedal is so light right now which I don't really get.

65,000 got a new clutch put in while getting the new LSD they told me it was less that 1/3 left. so why not. I also get that reverse problem i have to hold it in reverse and slowly let the clutch out then it pops in. And im having problems with 2nd now, sometimes it will go halfway and i have to bring it back up again and slam it in pain in the ass cause it tends to grind. Why is it doing this? its extremely cold here so maybe thats it? 1,000 on new clutch/diff.

I don't know if it's because is so frickin' cold here or what, but I've been getting a lot of clutch chatter. I mean I cannot get a smooth start no matter what I do. Or is this a sign the the clutch is going? 91000kms on the clock.

As for my clutch, 65k with plenty of life left. Swapped out because it couldn't hold the powaz any more.

Well my clutch pedal was a medium pressure before and now it is super soft. It catches right at the top which I understand with that rewound plate, but why is the pedal so light? I'd think it'd gain pressure from an upgraded clutch. The clutch is an Exedy blank with ceramic pads installed and the plate was rewound by the same guy.

My clutch was really light for two days after I got it back but now its back to normal. The new welded LSD was installed as was a new clutch because they were already in there (all stock parts) Second gear is kinda chunky now. Used to be smooth before the LSD blew.

This might sound funny, but once I put an AWR RMM in, I have a much easier time finding reverse.
