So just looking for some pointers in properly breaking in my new turbo (first)

I'll be picking up the car either Friday or Monday with my turbo kit installed and all new piping - but I wanna make sure the car doesn't end up back in the shop the next day.

Everything is BRAND new in the kit. New extra injectors, new turbo, new manifold, all new piping, new BOV, etc...

Anyways.. I was talking to BrianMP5T and he was just suggesting I baby it for 1000km (625miles). That'll be REALLLLY hard for me, but I don't want to mangle my turbo right off the bat, either.

by babying it, should I just shift at 5k rpm? I don't want to over-baby it either, so it freaks out when i stomp on it to 6200rpm for the first time (confused)

you dont need to break in nothing

so many negatives :o

so i'm to go from 70k miles with 0psi to 7psi without any gradual breaking in of the engine or the turbo?

i would take it relatively easy on it for the first 100 miles, then gradually get harder.

like get on it a little, but no redline, and lots of in-town driving, varing rpms, and small boost loads.

From everyone I've discussed it with, the common concensus is that the best way for an engine break in is not to romp on it, or to take it too easy, but find a happy medium in the middle.

625 miles is fucking long too. I've been putting random, useless miles on my engine and turbo for two weeks now and I have only driven 300 miles of my 500 mile break-in period.

Well his engine is broken in already.

What kind of turbo is it? Is it a ball bearing turbo? Not very educated in this stuff but I would say not to go crazy at 1st, ie redline it with in the 1st 5 miles.

But BrianMP5T knows his shit so i would go by what he says for this : )

Brian's the master of overkill, though.

it's a dual BB turbo.. it's just a GT25R... same shit as the MSP.

the engine is VERY broken in - like 70k miles broken in :P I've gotta find money for a new timing belt somewhere in there, too - last thing i need is to boost and then snap the timing belt.

I'll probably go with daedelus's suggestion and just drive in the happy middly.. i figure so long as i don't really go over 5k rpm, i should be alright.

lol.. when i drove Brian MP5T's car last weekend.. i was too scared to rev over 5500rpm, for fear of something breaking, and then him shooting me. (literally)

i know myself. and i'll drive about 200 conservative miles the first day i get my car back... then i'll probably drop the hammer the next day :P

it's a ball bearing turbo, you need not t break it in,but you do need to worry about the life of the motor, they do pop easy, especially with high miles on it.

Lol, my car is stock and I rarely rev over 4K. For some reason I'm scared because things are moving really fast, and I'm not that good at shifting beyond 4K, especially1->2.

Good luck with your car though man. Proteges with extra power are great cars.

my engine only needs to last until the winter.. then it gets fully rebuilt :) thank god.. i'll be up to like 125,000kms this winter.. time to back up the clock on the ride :P

yeah i wouldn't think you'd need to break in the turbo. just make sure there are no oil or coolant leaks, and let it cool off for 30secs or so after every drive.

The suggestion was made more to allow the turbo and the engine to learn each other. Paul is also running an extra injector controller and once set, it takes a bit of time for My ECU to "Learn" what is going on in the car...

yeah... Brian, you should come down to Ottawa next week or something... help me tune that shizzy up properly. I hope Spaz knows what they are doing for the initial install of the injectors :o
