Yeah, sadly, it is Winter here in Edmonton, and every vehicle looks cold unless it is in a garage. And, I don't own the Protege yet (I am still trying to work out a deal with the Ford dealership), but when I do, she won't look so cold.

Thanks. If you examine the hood closer theres a slight dent. So its like a pig snout...I gotta get rid of a tiny door ding on the driver side too... But in a few months it will have a Wings West kit on. No more simple and clean :(

I should take a pic of the protege in the Canadian Winters. Theres probably like half an inch of build up of dirt and salt or something.. haha.

I'm definitely feeling the 2 red 99-00 protege's also. If cars were super heroes, y'all would be the "Dynamic Duo"...lol Lunatik, I saw your car in person when Danny used to own it. He really took care of that car and he was truly a perfectionist.

thanks i want to get new rims. does anyone know if enkei rpf01's come in a high enough offset?yes they do

16x7 _ 5x114.3 _ 43 offset
17x7.5 _ 5x114.3 _ 48 offset

either of those would work just fine (assuming you use a reasonable tire size)

I doubt you'd want 18s but these could fit with rubber band tires:

18x7.5 _ 5x114.3 _ 48 offset

You are correct. I found my (the deal is done) Protege at Kentwood Ford. And, after driving around the city, I haven't found another Protege of the same colour. So far, so good, lol.
By the way, your black Protege is rare and nice. I also see the dent that you have mentioned, well, if you look at my pics and look closely at the driver's side front fender, you will see a dent there. I am not happy with the dent, but it came with the package. Sadly, these dents take away from the look of the car, but having this car far outweighs the dent (s).
I look forward to making some new additions to my Protege, and it will start with installing my Kenwood deck....

thanks mad_dream for the comment. i actually did remove the side moldings but i guess when they sprayed the car they put it clear coat on after the side moldings (idk if this is how it's supposed to be done). but yah so when i took them off you could see and outline of where the molding was.

and thanks nate0123 for the info and link. i'm still debating whether or not to change my rims or go back to stocks and drop the car another inch or so.

Lunatik im sorry but im thinking about getting the same wheels you have. i have reasons.

1. wont have to paint lip (if any are left).

2. goes good with red.

3. smoke out headlights and maybe taillights

4. matches painted grille

5. makes the car look "harder."

actually yes I do plan on lowering it I have had some Tien S in my garage for about 6months now...decided I would finally get off my ass and do it. Mostly because I have started collecting parts for a turbo setup and my wife is freaking out that I am spending money on parts that I am not putting on so yeah.

Hey Chico, your car is awesome! I was looking at the first few pics, and I liked them lots. You had black accents (gas door, spoiler, etc.) and they looked good, then my wife walks by as I am looking at the pics, and she didn't like those black accents. But, after viewing the latter pics with everything matching your paint job, she looks even better. Good job!

That is my original rear bumper. EDM one, which i'm getting disposed of soon I hope. The diffuser is the wingswest rear skirt. Had it custom fit to the shorter EDM bumper. Hope to buy a new USDM rear bumper with an MP3 lip.
The WingsWest sits a bit high imho, doesn't suit the line of the sideskirts.

Love the black moldings on the rear bumper. (2thumbs)

Hey guys. Just wondering what do you guys suggest for a color scheme. My car is black but I'm thinking of putting a different color or design or something. We all see White Proteges with a black hood or Cf with black, but what would you guys think of a black protege with a white scheme. I just can't think of anything that would look good with black...

yeah that front bumper is hideous killer

(scratch)(uhm) well what can i say. I made it my self and haven't had the chance to clean it up make it smaller and mold it better as well as all the other things that would make a it look nice and respectable but the only thing i can only say in my own defence is that it is one of a kind(first) and i made it like that because every one has the MP3, MSP, BuddyClub, and a few (as well as me at one time) even have the EVO 5 front bumper extender. i liked the original front bumper but hated it wasn't low enough so i extended it so it may be ugly to you But on the road at the angle my car rides running up on you from behind it has a aggressive look to it, with a rawness appeal since its not 100% done and from other local racers don't mind it but most of the time they are looking at the rear of the car anyway. If i keep it, it may get better but i always like to be able to say its my car and its the only one with that style bumper. Love it or hate it i made it and Like that ugLy ass pittbull down the street i wouldn't fuck with it though

P.S.
the paint was because of the line from the lower half is easier to miss from afar when black and i never got around to repainting the car, this is just a replay no flame is intended if i sounded mad or what ever. can't satisfy every one

Nope, the Protege5 is shorter than the sedans by several inches, and all of those inches are in the rear bumper region.

I was going to silver to match the car.... but I thought it would look too normal, so, I am going to go black. I know about the grill, I bought it off of ebay like 4 months after I bought the car new in '03, and put it on, closed the hood & CRACK, it broke. I e-mailed the company (from Taiwan) and the basically told me I had an aftermarket bumper & to F-off! So after spending like $120 I just left it. I am looking at a CF hood, with silver side, so I might put the original grill back on, or a CF grill to match the hood. BUT definately black for sides & rear. Thanks for all the help to everyone!

WOW thats a good deal! Might want to jump on that D-Rock? (thumb)

Definitely thinking about it, I have to see how much the Nittos, Tokicos and RB sways are going to be. Right now that is higher on my priority list. I just got it back from the body shop tonight actually. Apparently the formula for the paint was changed late last year, and the repainted rear bumper seems to match better than the front bumper and kit. So good to know when I get the mirrors and spoiler and get them painted it will look more matched. :)

i do agree with you on sticking with the stock spoiler...but sometimes i feel like my car isn't sporty enough....and when i look at it from the side it doesn't balance.....i kinda feel like having a bigger or a tiny bit higher spoiler.... my uncle has a 99 protege with front end conversion to a 03 with wings west body kit and also has a mazdaspeed spoiler on it....i really love it...its a bad ass.....after seeing his spoiler in person, i really want one for my car...

It's all stock outside at the moment. Intake and exhaust will be done as soon as I have the time. Already have two 12 inch subs and an amp in the trunk, but I do need a new header unit. When I put a body kit on it, I'm going to remove the gold pinstripe running down the side. Anybody know if a heat gun would be the best way to do this, it's vinyl I know. In the end this car will be really clean, new rims, low profile Erebuni kit, possibly a stock spoiler dunno, and some other mods.

use an eraser wheel to get off the pinstripe or a heat gun very carfully. make sure you keep the gun moving so you dont burn any paint.

Eraser wheel will work well with that? Yeah, almost all pinstripes I've encountered on cars are vinyl. I know some of you guys aren't fans of decals, but the only ones im doing is a few brand names down the front side doors. It will still have the clean look. I've also just finished installing my 12inch subs completely, so I'll snap a pic of my trunk when I get back.

The last pic is of the remote I'm currently using to turn the AMP on/off. I haven't had time to wire the AMP to the fusebox or another circuit that is only active when the car is on, therefore the ghetto lightswitch. It'll be gone as soon as I get the time. Also you might be able to see the fuse is in the trunk at the moment. Don't ask why it's there, I've done tons of installs like this, and for some reason I just blanked and accidentally put it back there instead of under the hood. Again, it'll be fixed as soon as I get a chance, as will the assortment of loose wires. Between school and work I don't have enough time for my baby :(

Oh, and outkastedpro is that the Erebuni shogun kit on your car? I couldn't tell from the picture.

Yes and no. The mouldings themselves come off easily, but the glue that attaches them is a pain in the ass. Just get some 3M adhesive remover though and you'll be set.

My car is a 1999 Protege, and I just did mine about a month ago. Can't even tell they were even on there......no paint fade or nothing.:D

The stock msp lip doesn't "add more" to the bumper.. it was a tacked on afterthought, the sideskirts were designed for the MP3/Protege5 bumper anyway.

I was saying that you don't at all need a lip to meet up with the sideskirts. It flows perfectly without a lip. I don't think the sedan sideskirt "hangs down" much, so it probably wouldn't screw that up like the DG lip does.

aww man u got the weapon-r. i just took mines off it sprung a leak somewhere. hows it run?

if you find a different coupler, or just put the tubing in further, you can get a better fitment, and get the filter farther away from that hot pipe. the weapon-r coupler has a stopper in it to keep the tubing straight towards the manifold.

Jester236
04-26-2007, 03:39 PM
I know you said to avoid the weapon-r's but it's been great for me. I had zero install issues, fitment was great and it runs well. Of course only time will truly tell.

As far as the filter, its farther away from the pipe than what the picture looks like. I tried moving my battery over a bit to gain a little room but that didn't help. Fits fine, and I don't think i will run into an issues over that.

To a certain extent, I agree. You have a black Protege, and removing the side moldings may result in that area being darker then the rest of your car. Then again, I have millennium red mica paint color, and I didn't notice any difference.

And, you're welcome for the idea.

Now that you have mentioned "buffing and polishing", I have thought about that in a different aspect: is there a polish that can used to fill in some chips/scratches to the paint, without repainting? I did see a commercial about it, but that was quite a while ago. Any ideas?

You might want to pm MR. Detailer. I think he resides in the WI forums. Great guy for advice on questions about detailing the mazda.
