I HAVE MORE GOOD NEWS!!!
The OBX header for the 1.6l is supposed to be released some time this week. Both Tuning Depot.com and Protegegarage.com have said they will carry the header and have it available for sale. However, Ken of Protegegarage.com said that he will have the better deal on the header and let us know when he has it in stock. Also, if we can find 10 people serious about buying this header (the minimum number OBX wants before setting up a GB) then he would consider saving us even more money and doing a GB here. So this can be a GI thread for the header as well.
Only serious buyers please when putting name on list!!! You all can view www.protegegarage.com (http://www.protegegarage.com/) , for Ken's pricing. I'll continue talking with him to get specifics about a POSSIBLE GB if we get the needed number of people. I'll check this thread often and keep everyone updated. I'll start the list and we'l go from there!!

I have spoken with OBX today and reserved the first run of these headers before TD could :D competition is a bitch aint it, lol
I will do a GB if I can get 10 people who are interested in either the 1.6 or 2.0 header, so we can have five of each for example rather than just 10 of one kind.

GREAT!!! Put the names on the list. Ken will fill us all in with the details. I e-mailed OBX Racing myself and got the response from them. They told me they are finally going to be released the first week of June. Ken has managed to get his hands on the first batch of headers for us. As long as we get at least 10 people (for either 1.6 or 2.0) then he will be able to get us a great price on them. So, lets fill up the list!!

I'd recommend you do the non-fouler fix. It's pretty simple. Purchase two spark plug non-foulers, drill out one of them with a 1/2 inch drillbit, and screw them all together. This is for the 2nd o2 sensor located at the bottom of the header. It'll go o2 sensor -> nonfouler (drilled out) -> nonfouler (non-drilled) -> header.
Great fix, costs about $5 to do. Search for thread titled "testing new NO CEL method on catless cars.

You might have some issues w/the EGR valve. Do a search for OBX header and EGR valve. You should see some advice. I would recommend you gently screw in the EGR valve first, then push the header onto the engine block and screw in the bolts on the engine block. Then tighten the EGR valve, then tighten the engine block bolts.
This is after you've done the lower spring bolts btw.
A crowbar might be handy, but just be careful. tyusha can tell you all about that (or search for his thread).

This is probably a question that has been asked many times before but, when going to an after-market header, does the CEL always come on? Or are the O2 censor locations still relatively close to stock so they read correctly?

you need a spark plug non fouler or mil eliminator to keep from having a CEL
Lord_Zath
06-02-2005, 10:54 PM
You'll need something to "trick" the second o2 sensor into believing everything's fine.
MIL eliminator requires soldering, costs a couple bucks.
Mon-fouler requires some drilling, costs a cuple bucks more.
I have non-fouler fix on, and no problems so far (~1,500 miles).
Search for either, read up, choose one.
The reason it won't read correctly is a header removes the first catalytic converter, so the readings the o2 is getting aren't what it thinks it's supposed to be.

Ok, doesn't sound like a hard fix by any means, so I suppose that's good. Has anyone had any problems with the non-fouler?

Shouldnt be a problem for 1.6er's we don't have the "pre-cat", only the single one

Yeah, thats how it will work. Right now this is only a General Interest thread. As soon as we get 10 serious buyers, then the price of the headers (for the 1.6 and 1.8/2.0) will drop to two hundred and some odd dollars plus shipping. If we don't meet the minimum 10 buyers, then this is just a thread saying that 8 or 9 people want the OBX header for 243.00 plus shipping. Thats why we have to get the extra 2 people to help us save 40 or so dollars.

Dave was just the guy I e-mailed at OBX Racing Sports. I got the e-mail from him telling me to contact the guys at Tuning Depot. Dave only sells the headers wholesale so thats why he sent me to those two. They are the ones who sell to the public.
Thanks Ken for running this GB. I hope I helped change your views about header GBs in the future. I would hate for anyone to miss out here and not be able to get this at a later time.

I don't believe they do. Even if they did, I've heard that they eventually fall off due to the heat on stupid little welds.

Why 2"? Most aftermarket exhausts, Axelback or cat-back, are 2.25, 2.5, or 3...
HI-RES
06-13-2005, 01:52 AM
2.25 for a 1.6ltr is an overkill, 2" mandrel is enough. Dont want to lose any low end torque (its bad enough already).
yeah most exhausts are that size (dont know about 3 though) but are they specifically designed for the 1.6? or are they for the 1.8 & 2.0? And just because they sell them at size X" doesnt mean its the most efficient for what setup you have.
but anyway if turns out to be 2.25, i'll get a crush bent system instead of mandrel I guess. Just means I have to sell the 2" high flow cat I've got sitting in the garage :(
Lord_Zath
06-13-2005, 02:03 AM
wait so you don't want to lose low-end torque, yet you intend to install a high-flow cat???
I didn't realize you had the 1.6 engine. Good luck in your pursuits; doubt I can help you lol
HI-RES
06-13-2005, 04:05 AM
Of course a little low end torque will be lost with the new cat, I mean to say I dont need to lose anymore by putting in an oversized pipe and slowing down the gas flow so I have to rev hard to get anything out of it.
And of course I have a 1.6, and no, bein smart ass doesnt help anyone..

Believe me; I’m for performance over show. However, I’ve seen this header in the past and the placement of the badge was … er …. fugly IMO. If the badge was on one pipe, relatively flush and snug I wouldn’t mind at all. Does anyone have a definitive answer? I plan on having the header ceramic coated at Jet –Hot. I suppose a grinder could solve the issue! (thumb)

I completely understand - I've seen pics of "Forza motorsports" plastered on the header. Ain't pretty. But yes Jet-Hot should be able to grind it off w/o too much of an issue.
As for the dude w/the 03 p5, I have the same thing. What's required - removal of stock exhaust manifold and 1st catalytic converter, and using a "trick" for the second o2 sensor - a nonfouler works best - search for spark plug non-fouler.

All you need is a 1/2 inch drillbit, drill, and perhaps some WD40 or other substance that helps loosen up the o2 sensor. I know for installing mine, we had to also purchase an o2 sensor socket.
It's pretty easy to do. I'm sure Ken or Brian (ZoomThis) wouldn't mind helping you out. My skills are mainly in watching and taking pictures hehe.

Sign me up for when this is a go (03 P5 2.0). I'm still waiting on my Wagner shorty to arrive, but between the time a got in on that group buy and now I've had an epiphany. Unless the Wagner header has gone through the California Air Resource Board for testing and certification guess what? ... Still not legal - at least here in Cali. Even if both cats are retained and it passes a sniff test, no C.A.R.B # - no passy smog inspection.(hand) I'm all for clean air, but I don't believe removing the pre-cat is going to make me a gross polluter. If I'm going to have to replace the stock manifold for a smog test anyway, I might as well have a full length header. I'm not expecting anyone in this thread to have interest in the Wagner header. This said, if anyone knows a member that can use the SS Wagner shorty for their application, I'll sell it for cost and I'll split the shipping just to be fair. PM me for details - it's a good deal. As soon as it arrives I'll pull it out of the box / post pictures / follow the forum rules.

Ok, I have run into a few issues this weekend and after some serious contemplation have come to a difficult decision.
I will no longer be offering group buys to international customers, and will no longer ship anything international unless it is with the US Postal Service. I have had two notices come back from Customs demanding payment for duties and fees that my customers, all on these headers actually, have decided is not thier responsibility to pay. Pending admin approval, I will publish the names of these individuals in the for sale sections so that they cannot screw another vendor or member over again.
I am sorry that the actions of a few must hamper it for others, but these kinds of altercations cost me a good deal of money and time to handle. I have also had the fortune of having a Canadian customer cancel his personal check on me after recieving his parts, which led me to no longer accept checks of any kind from a source outside the US.

Man thats pretty wack, sorry to hear it.
If I cant be part of the group buy then how do I go about ordering from you, do I have to pay full retail I guess?
Ken if its any consolation, I've ordered plenty of stuff from the states before and know how the customs system works. If this header is sent USPS to australia there will be no customs BS on anyone's end.
I respect your stance on the matter, but naturally I find this situation frustrating because I always do these things by the book

sr does NOT make the header. like all thier other parts the take them and rebadge them as thier own, in this case, the obx header. i know this because the picture they have on thier site is a picture i took from way back when. they do not have 1.6 headers.

yeah the SR motorsports header is what 500 bucks? Pretty expensive re-badge!
It's the same as the OBX header. Don't go wasting any more money than you have to.

I know the first attempt at the GB for the 1.6 liter headers took a slight detour. But would you still offer the special GB pricing once OBX releases these (if they EVER do)? Im still very interested in buying this header and am willing to wait it out if necessary. Think about it man!! Thanks.

word i have from people inside OBX is that these are never coming out

now that's better to know that they aren't never coming out so we won't be waiting for it, so the only thing to get extra power for our 1.6L is by going turbo ....yeah...

So you mean we have NOTHING as far as an exhaust header goes? What are we left with then? Port/polishing?? Not to doubt your sources or anything, but who did you hear the "word" from? Is it someone reputable?

okay, just curious. So, where does that leave us 1.6ers now?

if anything ever comes of it (its several YEARS overdue now) i will let you all know.
i have to be honest with you - a header is not going to make a huge difference on the 1.6 liter. even when combined with an intake and exhaust, its not going to make it worth the money you spend into it. figure 250 for a header, 250 for an intake, 500 for an exhaust (granted these are high estimates), plus assorted mods to go with them, you are already 1000+ dollars into mods that really aren't going to net you many gains. That and there simply aren't enough other parts available for the 1.6 to accompany things like the header. The very best performance modification you can get for this engine is really the HiBoost turbo kit, and if you're willing to spend a grand or more on mods as it is, one might as well save up that much more for some serious horsepower.

Okay, kinda sucks to hear that. If headers are out of the question, then would the next "best" step be a visit to a machine shop for port/polishing? I figure with a good port job you can get about the same kind of performance as a set of headers would net you, right? All you are really doing is opening up the piping a bit to allow more air to come in/go out, correct? Then maybe porting/polishing the head and IM as well would help to. And since there is no bigger TB or MAF, maybe bore out the TB a little bit and get rid of the bottlenecks in the MAF???

the costs of porting and polishing the head would be in the thousands of dollars. it has been shown on the 1.8 and 2.0 that throttle body work does next to nothing in terms of performance. that and the ECU will not be able to adapt to these mods anyhow. for the money you will be spending to do the work you speak of, you can buy a turbo, have a more reliable setup and make more power.

Soooooo....... you're pretty much saying that I should just start saving up for the turbo kit now? Should I start reinforcing the tranny now if I plan on boosting in the future? Since I have an auto, I would need things like an tranny cooler, torque converter, right? Then other small nic-nacs in the future before or after purchasing the actual kit??

yes, if you want serious power from this car in its current state (1.6, auto trans), i would definetely start saving for the hiboost kit and the trans cooler. at low boost your converter should hold up as long as you do not abuse the hell out of it.

Alright, gotcha!! So "low-boost" would be 6-7 PSI correct? Plus as long as I don't drop the hammer to the floor every time I accelerate, the tranny should hold up?
