View Full Version : Large signatures

Read this carefully. If you are asked to read this thread, and you fail to comply with what is written below, your signature rights will be revoked.
In the past several months, some signatures have been getting quite large. This has lead us to introduce a new policy for signatures. To put it simply, when browsed at 1024x768 in a maximized browser a sig :
- should be no more than 300 pix height. This includes text and pics...anything below the black divider line.
- should not cause the page to scroll horizontally
Therefore, we are setting the size limitation to 300x~750 pixels.
If your signature is larger than that in either way, please change it. If a moderator informs you that your sig is too large, please do not argue and please comply with his or her request within 24 hours. If you do not, action will be taken. Habitual offenses will result in a loss of signature rights.
If you think that your signature may be too large, you can use the following 300x300 image to test it. Simply open the image in a small image viewer window and compare the height against your signature. Like so:
http://www.msprotege.com/members/Kooldino/300example.jpg
For example, the above signature is too big. It is taller than the height of the box.
I would have included a 750 pixel image as well, but the only thing that matters width wise is that it does not cause horizontal scroll bars to appear at 1024x768.
mine is probably 310 high is that ok? its just a little bigger than the red box you made. or should i resize it?

Yeah I'd also suggest limiting text as well. Some people have sigs w/nothing but text taking up the entire squeen on 1024x768...

The 300 pixel height limit is for *both* the picture and any text above or below it. So you can't have a 275 pixel high image, and then 4 lines of text.
Like KoolDino said, click on his attachement. This will open a 300px image in a new window. Line up the top of that image with the top of your signature (the little horizontal line right above it). If the top of the 'Reply' buttons are BELOW the end of the 300px sample, your signature is too big.

we need the forum to automatically reduce the display size of anything that's larger than 300pix in height.. or reduce the width if needed.. then we don't have to count on 17,461 users to read this post and act upon it.. if it were automatic, the problem would be solved.
If the top of the 'Reply' buttons are BELOW the end of the 300px sample, your signature is too big.
good point, now the posts that i have edited and include my signature are illegal because the edited time & reason line push those buttons down too far :D

not that anyone cares but...
I think its good that we're still trying to get a handle on the sigs. though I will say that the sigs keep this community relatively unique amongst large dedicated forums (NASOIC, VWVortex, FocalJet, etc) and I think they are an important part of what keeps the community free-flowing. 300 pix images + a couple lines of text max would be my vote...

And yeah, that space is added automatically.

It also depends on people's display, the other day I was asked to resize my sig (which I did) b/c it brought up the horizontal scroll bar, but on my computer it didn't bring up the scroll bar, but I guess the size suggested would be fine if everybody takes the time to do it.

I turned off signatures a while back for this reason and for the non-work-friendly images people were using. Its amazing how much easier it is to follow the threads when you don't have to scroll through pages of signatures, animated gifs, and other junk.
When I want to know more about a person I click on their screen name and select "View Public Profile".
Personally, I think 300 pixels is being real generous. 200 pixels is all you really need. If you can't say or show what you want in a 200x600 pixel area, chances are you need a website to display your information. Remove some stuf and provide a link for more information. People will click it if they are interested.

I say go one step further... all lists of mods should go in peoples' profiles. I realize that makes for more work for folks that want to know what upgrades a person has done, but honestly it's easier on the eyes.
Then you have all that room in your sig for your artistic expression... whatever that may be.

I think whats more important is the actual size of people's sigs... mine may look big, but its under 50KB becuase I reduce the qualities, where as there are people with much smaller (visually) sigs that are actually quite large.

If people don't read this, then the mods will ask them to change it.

Dude, 300 pixel + text = half a page. That's absurd.
Not to be a dick, but this thread is here to notify you of our new policy. The policy itself is not open for discussion. A 300 pixel sig is still VERY liberal compared to other forums, as you pointed out.
I have no problem w/ people putting info in their sigs, but they just have to be efficient in the layout. Look at mine for instance...I list 100 mods and have a picture of my car in under 300 pixels, with enough room to spare for a link or two.

yes, that would be asinine. reduce it each time the sig is saved in the usercp. why reduce it each time a post is displayed??

my sig is along the same lines, I actually went out and figured out how to run scrolling so that I could list my mods and not clutter the pages before this came about... I mentioned that "not that anyone cares..." if was simply a piece of input that was evidently unwanted. that's cool with me, I just thought I'd offer. oh well, hope this policy goes over smoothly (as it should) and without too much extra work from you mods. :)

yes, that would be asinine. reduce it each time the sig is saved in the usercp.
That's a good idea in theory, but what happens if the sig is linked to an image that is hosted offsite?
Even if it complies the first time around, the image can later be changed without the sig being re-saved (read: re-evaluated) in the userCP.
So the only way to absolutely test it would be to do it upon each post.
or reduce it on the client side using javascript.
Ok, how? And what method of reduction would be used? Also, your solution can't use an embedded frame.

Hey, I don't have all day to argue with people about why we chose 300 pixels. You were the first one to complain about it being too small, and I was nipping it in the bud.

I applaud that, and we were hoping that others would have done the same as you. But apparently, not everyone did, and that's why we needed some restriction.

There was a good point brought up on the previous page about file size. Most people use jpegs for their images. When you save your jpeg, try sliding the quality bar down. Instead of using 9, try 5 or 6. It makes a huge difference in file size and you can barely tell the difference. I try to keep my image under 50K. Take a look. It is 600x170 but only 27K! Could you tell?
Along the same lines, please host your signature image on this site using the "upload files" option in your User CP. It makes loading the page much faster. If you ever tried scrolling down while everyone's signatures are loading from free hosting sites you know what I'm talking about. The screen jumps around as you wait upwards of 60 seconds for people's signatures to load.

okay, I'm not familiar with your forum application, but run the signature through this javascript function I whipped up to display it, instead of just outputting it..
<html>
<head>
<script>
function ResizeSigImg(sig,newheight) {
sig = sig.replace(/height=/gi, "height="+newheight+" OLDHEIGHT=");
sig = sig.replace(/width=/gi, "OLDWIDTH=");
document.write(sig);
}
</script>
</head>
<script>
ResizeSigImg("This is my sig.<br>This is it!<br><img src='http://www.google.com/intl/en/images/logo.gif' hEIGHT=400 wIDTH=400><br><font size=+2>hello!, world</font>",50);
</script>
</html>
this is the output:
This is my sig.
This is it!
http://www.google.com/intl/en/images/logo.gif
hello!, world
despite the fact that the "google" image is actually 276x110, it is now being displayed with a height of 50 instead of 110.
the javascript function would need to be included in the header as well.. also, I passed the newheight size (50) as a parameter, but could be hard coded into the function...
hope this helps..

Nuno, I didn't mean case as in case sensetive, I meant "case" as in "scenario".
The function would have to add the image size to the whitespace to the height of the text (all measured in pixels), and if it were above 300, reduce them.

i would suggest just using my script to resize the image to 200 pix then to allow room for text.. the script can't do magic, but it can at least help.

what are you talking about.. it won't limit any text.. it will simply reduce the display size of the pictures in their sig. it's no big deal.

what are you talking about.. it won't limit any text.. it will simply reduce the display size of the pictures in their sig.
And that's the problem. People can have a 300 pixel signature. 300 pixels could be 250 image / 50 text, it could be 300 text, it could be 300 pixel, etc.
So why would I want to limit the size of the image to 200 to allow 100 pixels for text? That would screw up everyone who had a 300 pixel image and NO text. You follow?
i'm done trying to help.. every solution i've come up with, you've shot down with some stupid reason.

If you want to be real savvy, there is a way to get the window size from javascript...
http://www.howtocreate.co.uk/tutorials/index.php?tut=0&part=16
Depending on the width of the window you could load a different image.
I personally have my desktop at 1280x1024 but I rarely let my browser take up the entire screen (usually 800-1000 pixels is enough for most sites).

That's funny, because your last few posts in this thread were only minutes apart. I don't care where you are all day, etc. You were still browsing this thread when you were told multiple times to change your sig.
Someone pm'ed me saying kd used his mod powers to unloick the thread, post, and locked it again. That's not true. Super mods and admins can post in locked threads, so, it's probably just more likely that kd read the post, hit "quote" on it, and replied to it.
He wouldn't have seen the "CLOSED" icon until he went all the way to the bottom of the thread, which is BELOW whatever post he was quoting.

Well said and exactly right! (thumb)
I have not even been here a year and it has been upward from what I have seen. The organization has gotten better, the mod's are cracking down to keep attitudes right and provide a better atmosphere, the Mazda 3 section and vendors are growing (and I see them getting better with the increasing popularity of the 3). Anyway.... I don't agree with you.
