Hey guys I was wondering ... I have a 2004 Mazda 6s auto, but the thing is that I was trying to take out the tray out of my airbox which I heard is supposed to give a slightly deeper rumble to the car, and I couldn't take out the tray. It won't budge ... any ideas???

LoL, buy a short ram intake, you won't have to rigg up your car.

Then save up. Don't ghettofy your car.
This mod isn't ghettofying the car. This is to be considered as a stepping stone for later mods. Most who did the mod has gained from it enough to actualy be movated twards purchasing a cai to see if it's that much better. Most of the mods need to be done if you install a cai anyways. I can't get either sites for the actual mod cause the other forums search feature is usless and my bookmarks are on my comp in Va. so here goes.
*I took a flat head to the tabs and pulled up on the restrictor plate.
*Removed resonator.
*Disconected vad lines but left flapper attached
*Purchased the reusable K&N filter(don't need this)
Restrictor plate soes as it sounds so it was removed. Resonator is designed as it sounds and it's removed. Vad is a flap that stays closed tilll vvt whn it opens. but untill VVT happens the air box is only 30%-40% efficent so it was disconected. Scuba is abother thing to be removed but since it's located behind the radiator it's removal isn't the greatest Idea so it stays.
As for the SRI idea on a mazda 6...I'd stay away from it. From personal experiences or downfalls I can tell you the gains you want are not gona be given with the intake. You are sucking in 180-210 degree heat from the engine and cooling fans kiling a few stock ponies. You may feel a nice gain in the morining as you drive off on a cold engine but second you get the engine warmed the sri does a 180 degree turn for the worse. you loose low end acceleration and vvt is just horrible. If you think I'm done....wait theres more ;) Try climbing a hill in the summer with a sri on and you will find yourself going "WHY is my foot to the floor but the car won't go faster than 34MPH!?!"
In short for for those who may have skimmed thru my post as usual...
*Airbox mod is considered a stepping stone.
*Flathead to lossen the tabs and pull up on restrictor plate(tray).
and
*SRI is bad for your Mazda 6

Yeah. Based on what he said (deeper rumble) that led me to say what I did. Are there any dynos to prove this? I think the placebo effect makes your butt dyno think there's an advantage.

Doing the airbox mod results in about an overall 20-25% decrease in restriction in the stock intake system. (Flowbenched by CP-E).
I'd say its worth about 3 hp.
when people say every lil bit adds up..this is one of those mods. Thats why I say stepping stone. Removal of just the restrictor plate won't drasticly change your sound. Resonator delete will somewhat(not drasticly) change your sound. Not shure about the rest of you guys but I didn't like the dirtdevil vaccum sounds the car made ;) I later fabed an CAI out of a AEM SRI(Thanx ebay for your misleading ads and calling it a cai) untill I could afford to lay money down on a cp-e system. I held out to see if they would make the tunable version in wich they are still working on.
Not everyone on this foum is able to sit down and buy massive car parts especialy when they are supporting a family and or that significant other who sees a sale on shoes they will only wear 1 time but questions their reasoning on buying car parts that will be used more times than her shoes. Always get the full story before passing final judgement. F.Y.I this may not be the posters real reason on why they can't get a cai, just an example.

thanks da6 ... thing is im still only in high school and getting money isn't all too easy for me ... again like da6 said, this just might be a stepping stone for me
http://www.amity.org/~data/m6airboxmod/ <---Airbox Mod
Airbox mod is a widely known mod in most 6 communitys. This mod gives more of a sound than perfomance gain. this is considered a "Stepping Stone" mod. Parts of this mod have to be completed anyways for instalation of a cai. If you don't feel up to the task of any mod stop before dissasembling anything and ask for helf from someone who can comprehend the instructions given.

mod done ... i love the sound it makes (rofl) a lot more manly RAWR
J dragon you should do a poll and see how many HS students have 6's and then ask them how many are V6 ;) Theres a "how old are you thread" somewhere and there was a lot of 16-17 -18 yr olds popping up in it!
Congrads on completing the mod and one day you will have the cai to make an even more manly V6'ish sound!

I couldn't remember where I posted this. I thought it was on the 6 forums.
Anyway, now that I know what this mod is, I did it myself. BUT...
The "tuba" piece. I wouldn't remove that. If you notice, the hole it makes it sitting right behind the rad fan. I dunno about you all, but I'm not a big fan of forcing hot ass air into my intake.

o shoot ... i never noticed that ... good point i'll be sure to put the tuba back on

Da 6 was right about the short ram intake. I had one on my Protege and took it off after 2 years. The car is now much more responsive on the low end. A total waste of money IMO. Another suggestion if you want your car a little louder is to buy new mufflers. You could have a shop weld them in for you for maybe $175. Its a little more expensive considering you have a dual exhaust, but would sound pretty nice.

I left mine on so it looked stock when they do the full circle inspections.

wait...so the tuba really does present a problem??? or i mean taking it off?
yes and no. The scubas stock location does nothing for performance. The hood on the 6 has 2 seals in the front alone so the positioning means nothing cause it still sucks in the radiator air. Pop the hood one day and look at it. There is the initial seal near the lip and then another seal like an inch behind it that sits on top of the radiaror when closed.

This is stupid of me, but i attempted this mod...earler yesterday, I had trouble lifting the top of the airbox from the bottom, the directions say there are 4 clips holding the lid of the airbox down. I only saw two....and getting the big tube connecting to the engine body is a pain too..I don't want to break anything.
Nope, 3 plastic nipples on bottom airbox being held bown by rubber washers on a gold metal bracket. take phillips and disconnect the bellows(blaccaccordian thinggy) tube from airbox side, disconnect maf by the clasp or 2 philips screws, and pull the green connectionon oppiside of the box(green connection with mitsu symbols on bottom half of sensor) before pulling up on airbox. Wish I was in va with my car! I could snap pictures and post a thread in less than 10.

Just did the airbox mod without removing the resonator...and I LOVE it.........I feel the gain, 3 hp I recommend this mod to anyone who doesn't want a CAI yet, or who is saving up for one , or Who wants to keep the car relatively stock (thumb) ...I WAS FLYIN THROUGH MY Neighborhood......So much more pick up
The most gains of the entire mod was the resonator delete. Resonator delete was sientificly proven to make more a difrence than running stock w/o a filter in place whatsoever.

howd u do the resonator removal again???
*Jack front left of car up
*Remove the drivers tire
*Remove the 4 most frontal pop rivets in splashguard
*Remove the 3(4 if you have lip kit)screws for the bottom end of splash guard and pry it back(03) Remove the screws for the back half of under splash guard and pry it back(04ish and up)
*locate the black plastic box thingy(resonator)
*Find the single gold in color 10mm(IIRC) bolt ad remove it.
*Lift the box off the exposed screw and then pull back twards the trunk.
*Box should come off in your hands leaving 2 more gold bolts in the fenderwell on rubber washers

Just finished removing my resonator today,...I feel an even greater increase than just doing the airbox modification. Yet now I noticed that my transmission jumps because it's not used to having the restrictions removed..Is this normal?
