I dont think anyone has come out with a list of trouble codes/CEL codes for the 3 yet, they might be similar to the ones for the protege but I am not sure.
look it up on google hehe
i may be wrong, but i think trouble codes are universal because they have to follow OBDII diagnostics

They're in the service manual but there are like seven pages of them, so I'm not about to scan them and post them for you. If you have a code, you can PM me and I'll tell you what it is.

but are they universal yes or no
there are universal codes yes, but each car can have its own specific codes
the universal ones are usualy just general codes

if you are talking about CEL codes, yes they are universal

Autozone can read your code for free, and they have a little book that says what each means.

Hmm, I haven't heard that one, but I'm pretty sure that all new cars have to abide by the OBDII specifications. It's like a government regulation thing. Unless there is an even newer OBDIII out that I don't know about. In my car, the OBD port is under the dash to the left of the steering wheel. I don't know about mazda 3s', but i'mm 99% sure they have the same port(not necessarily in the same location though).

I've heard that, as well. It's not the protocol (they're all OBDII since 1996), it's the communication bus. I heard the A-zone scanners won't read the CAN bus that we use. Haven't verified it, though.
Tony, you can just come over my house if you need to read a code.
I have a CAN scanner and then we can just look it up in my service manual. (cool)
thats so cool how much are those scanners
