View Full Version : Update on turbo kit. 300+ WHP

This is to give an update on the progress of our car. We just dynoed the car at 9 psi with the 3 inch exhaust. The output is incredible. A little over 300 WHP at 9 psi.
At 7 psi the car made 260 WHP.
It looks like we need bigger injectors to go above 7 psi of boost safely.
Here are the dyno results..

Protege = 9psi ~ 200whp
i must say.. holy shit, I wish I bought a 3.

I just realized that Juan's kit has OVER doubled the stock hp. (bow)
Now I just wonder how the rest of the drivetrain is going to hold up to the punishment. (flame)
nice, 2 more years and my warrantee will be up, maybe then!

Yes, I too would like to know how the automatic tranny is holding up.
HiBoost TS

These tests are done just to see what kind of pressures and what the engine, tranny and clutch can handle.
The kits will be set at 5 psi for the automatics and 6.5 psi on the 5 speeds.
So far everything is holding fine. No clutch slippage, or any kind of transmission problems have ocurred.
The tranny will last long if you take it easy on it. No tranny will last if you are hard on it, being stock or turbo.

Juan, with 7psi showing 260whp, how far south would the 5psi setting for the automatic take us?

I don't think the ATX will hold up unless you address the temp issue assosiated with addin WHP to them...
hey thats awesome 300 whp men those are big numbers

Dude if only i had the $ i would buy one rite now, warranty or not.does any one know what the torque is at any psi. just woundring how quick the car feels, supose to how quick it goes.
go to they webste and look at the dyno tests

Juan,
In the curves your are in 3rd gear right, and is the rev limiter still in effector or are you just letting off the gas?

Niiice. So this is with internals I am guessing. What rods and pistons are in the test car? That extra .3L helps as well :D

^^^ Nope only injectors and a 3" exhaust.

The 309 was with exhaust only and with exhaust and injectors it made 330 WHP at 10 psi.
Stock internals, stock clutch. The only upgrades are turbo kit, 3 " exhaust and 42lbs/hr Bosch injectors.
With the haltech I can now set the rev limiter to wathever I want and will come pre set at 7000 RPMs.

Can the internals handle this for a long period of time? How does one fine out the max HP stock internals can handle on new engines (other than breaking them!)?

I guess that the best way is by testing them. I do not suggest to run over 250 WHP without forged internals.

so ummm when you going to go forged and see what that bad boy can do when it is built??? 400+????
nice i love it 330 is just great

Yes, it does.
In fact, it also fits a version of 1.8liter duratec in Europe.

Okay guys, after reading all the turbo and ATX threads, I'm unclear on a few details.
I build tranny's for a living, at a Dodge/Chryser dealer. I'm not real familiar with import trannys, but I do notice the 3's trans "ratchets" or buzzes into gear just like a caravan tranny.
So that makes it clear to me that the trans is controlled ENTIRELY by the pcm. It doesn't toggle a shift solenoid like the older trans, it sets line pressure, and applies the shift by duty cycling a solenoid pack to fill a clutch based on the CVI (clutch volume index) and signals from the input and output speed sensors. It can vary shift speed to achieve the programmed rate of clutch engagement. It also engages a torque reduction mode in the engine controller untill the shift is complete.
This brings me to my questions. First, we could have better holding power, later shifts and tire chirping shifts just by software reprogramming. Anyone experimenting in this area yet?
Also, with a turbo ATX, is the torque reduction still employed, or does the Haltec override that? The trans is most vulnerable between shifts, and if the trans could not recouple the load, slippage and runaway (toasted clutches) would result.

Good questions, I would also like to know. I want the turbo, but it seems like some major tranny work is needed first. Maybe a Lentech and LSD?? It would seem though that we ATXers need some ECU work as well. Should have saved $1500 and got the manual.

I believe there is a thread around covering the ATX issues. If you go with a Lentech tranny you can just have them put in the Kaaz lsd, no need for more work. As far as i know the Haltech unit being used, controls fuel...that's it. Next step up unit can control fuel & timing....don't think the Haltech will be used for any shift issues.
Going to have to seek Juan's info on how the ATX 6's are holding up over there. only way to see that it will actually handle.
