My parents just bought me a 2000 protege dx a couple a weeks ago because my other car broke down. I like the car a lot but, its very slow so I was wondering if anyone knew how to pile on the hp onto the protege. I was thinking about an engine swap but I have no idea what engine would fit or work. I was looking to spend somewhere around 3,000 or a little more if i have to. Someone please help me, I can't stand driving slow cars, oh and the car is stick as well.

there is engine swaps for our cars, but none of them are worth it, if you have a manual tranny, contact www.hiboost.com for a turbo kit, the 1.6l can hanlde 10 to 15 psi daily givvin you about 200whp to 250whp

Oh there are always engine swaps. It's just a measure of how much do you want to spend.

3k you can basically turbo the car no problem. Why spend like 3k on an engine swap. Im sure you have the 1.6L engine and since it has manual tranny, turbo is the best way to go. Actually there is engine swap for ur protege. Its in www.corksport.com and look for the 1.5L engine with varaiable timing valve engine @ 130 HP. Stock protege does around 105HP 107lb torque so engine swap will give you marginal gains. But if you turbo that thing, you can reach upto at least 150HP+ without doing massive of engine swaping work and so on.

A turbo doesnt sound like a bad idea but would I have to do anything to my tranny, its a manual by the way and im pretty sure it's a 1.6 liter engine. Thanks

yes, it is the 1.6. manual is perfect, you can use the stock clutch but you'd want to eventually upgrade to a racing clutch.

edit- shane beat me to it

before I went turbo I called corksport about it. they only sold one and they didn't know how the guy was able to make the protege work with the variable timing. something to think about for someone wanting to go that route

your gonna need a 1800 haltech unit that can control svt to run that engine or get the jdm ecu and harness to run it witch will come to same price, so u figure 2500 for 30 more crank hp
better to turbo for 3400 and get up to 200 pecent increase in power

Well I think I will try the turbo kit and post up a review for it in a couple of months. Wish me luck!

the 1.6 motor boosted is a monster, it has been proven to hold by hiboost, 20 psi at 290whp
