Just got my 2003 P5 last Saturday. Love it so far. Bought the car basically just to drive to work and back. Can anyone tell e what kind of fuel mileage I could expect to get. It's mostly all highway. No Stop a nd go city traffic. Thanks. (bowdown)

Welcome to the forum.. you will enjoy the drive to work in your 5. In two and a half years ive put 86,000 highway miles on my protege 5....and still loving it! It does great on the highwayim averaging 26mpg.

Welcome to the forums. I typically get around 20-25. Lots of short hauls and starts-stops help drive that number down.

If you want good mileage on the freeway stay at 65 and below. The fuel curve changes a lot as the RPMs rise, and you'll be suckin' way more fuel at 85 than 65. You should exceed 30 mpg if you do this.

welcome to the forum. when I had my 5 I had a short ram intake and got ~ 28mpg with city and highway mixed while tending to be a bit harsher than your average driver :D

I just got my car last Tuesday. (Already ordered a turbo kit, clutch, LSD and new tranny, springs, wheels).

These cars are fun, aren't they?

Damn dude!! think I will have to wait a while for the mods. Hell I'm just glad to have a dependable car to drive towork. Yep it's definately a fun car to drive. I'd say one of the best handling cars I've ever had.

Is this board highly censored or can people pretty much say what they want around here??

Thanks for the warm welcome...even if I did pick a lame-ass name....LOL.

Sweet! That's whut I'm tokkin about. Some boards that I frequent are just completely moronic with their censorship crap. It's like, if you don't the language, or whatever, then go piss up a rope. You'd even get in some serious crap for saying the word (ghey) at some of them. PPFF!!!

Welcome!

You will end up modding your car sooner or later! I bought mine to be a commuter car. Then I stumbled onto the forums, and the rest is history.

Here is the advice I have given recently to the new people. It covers a lot of the things I searched for and did when I got my car. Itis not a set of rules, it is just a list of the info. Enjoy, and rememebr to search the forums on topics you are thinking about. They are probably on here.

"Right after I got my P5, I got the intake. You have the short ram intake (SRI), which is what I have. Others have cold air intakes (CAI) They are about the same on ebay, but you may also opt for name brand. I have the ebay...

The next thing I did was get rid of those god forsaken Dunflop piece of shit stock tires. I hydroplaned within the first week or so I owned the P5. I ended up with the Yokohama AVS ES 100's. 205-50-16's on the stock rims. There are a bazillion threads about tires. These I highly recommend for rainy climates. (Bottom line, get out of the stock tires before you have a problem!)

I just got (after 2.5 years of owning my car) a Racing Beat exhaust. I got an insanely good deal on it. It is on the higher end of the pricing range, but you can score one used at a good rate if you are on the forum within the .245 seconds someone posts it for sale used. They run in the high $400 range new. There is a Mazda Sport (Mazdaspeed) exhaust which is also popular, but people have complained of droning, or an annoying sound at freeway speeds. The Racing Beat does not do that. But there are a bazillion threads about the exhaust subject too, look them up.

Then there is the tinting of windows, a stereo, springs/shocks/body kit, carbon fiber everything, etc you will see around here for sale.

Short shifter is next on my list. Kartboy makes a great one, I have seen it in person. The shifter bushings are a must. Get them no matter what. www.protegegarage.com (http://www.protegegarage.com/) has a B&M for only $79 and shipping right now! TWM also has a short shifter with a discount code here:http://www.msprotege.com/forum/showthread.php?p=1639737#post1639737 (http://../forum/showthread.php?p=1639737#post1639737)

One more thing you should consider when you mod is a header. OBX and Ractive are the most common. I just installed the Ractive, and love the HP gains.

Well, good luck, and check out the for sale section, and work with the Authorized Venders and sellers! Oh, search for threads about a question you might have. Most likely, it has been covered."

stock tires get a bad rap but they are actually quite good on roughly paved roads. they just need to get warmed up and they'll stick

Well, I-75 here in FL can be pretty rough. I hydroplaned perfectly fine on my Dunflops right after I got my car on a shitty section of I-75 with older pavement. The Dunflops are good on good, newer and dry roads with no turns. Once I got the Yokohamas, I never have had any traction problems at all. I heard that Yokohamas are as good as the Dunflops in snow though. I will worry about that whne it snows here in Florida.

Thanks guys. Looks like this place is gonna be full of good info on my new ride.

I'm not so much against obeying the rules, but some of the shit they censor on other boards is ridiculous. They treat ya like your in kindergarten or something. I'm a big boy now.....I hate being treated like a child.

I know, use the search feature. But does anyone know off the top of their head if MB Quart 6X8" Discus speakers will fit my front doors?? Cruthfield shows some 5X7's and some 6X8's and some 5 1/4" speakers that wil fit this car. Don't understand how different sizes like that can fit the same vehicle. (dunno)

I gotta do something....thing factory radio sucks monkey nuts. (headshake

I just bought a protege about a month ago and I get on average about 32+ miles to the gallon but I only drive interstate to and from work. I do have a question for anyone though. I can't figure out how to get a thread going. Can someone tell me how? Thanks.

ill agree with the stocks holding well in dry climates, I drive the ortega hwy pretty much everytime I go to the beach, they hold pretty good around the tuff turns, just watch out for any water, I hit a little streak across the road and ended up a weeee bit sideways thank god no traffic was oncomming... mine are getting bald, time for some new ish yaaaay lol

i honestly don't know how it is people get such bad mileage. on the highway at 75mph+ i get 30+ mpg. so far after 22000+ miles i have averaged over 28mpg. id say about 65-70% is town mileage. even driving around town and racing the car i get 24-25mpg. the worst i ever got was just over 21mpg and that was in the winter and letting my car idle every morning for like 5min before i went to work(that idling adds up to lots of wasted gas).

Just took a trip up to chico and san francisco from san diego. Averaged out at 28-30 miles per gallon with city and highway driving. I was happy with that.

2003 or 2003.5? Because I've got the 3.5 and I love the stock radio. But others have said I'm tonedeaf so (shrug) lol
