Just wanna let people know, that i got my car back from mazda, and they said my exhaust manifold was cracked. they are bringing in a replacement under warranty.

funny part is that i test exhaust manifolds for a living, and i would love to see the crack after only 30,000kms.

this msp is starting to look like a ticking time bomb.. i'm definately looking to trade in for a wrx come this summer.

engine ticking ? = broken exhaust manifold?

I'm curious too....
I don't see how idiotic a dealer is blaming a engine tick on an exhaust mani. lol.

Well, I don't see how engine ticking is tied to the exhaust mani. But I can definately see that POS cracking.

I wonder how they traced it to that unless they were just looking and saw you mani cracked

i just brought it in, mentioning that it is the loudest at startup and small revs under 1500rpm. also that it is localized at the first cylinder.

i guess they took off the heatshield and saw it. i can't wait to see it myself, i should have stuck around to see them work on it.

its not the loudest tick, but im wondering if they are trying to get business by upselling. i can't wait to see if it is actually cracked.

An exhaust leak can def. tick. If it isn't cracked when the dealership sends it back the claim would be denied and the dealership would have to pay for it. I highly doubt they are making it up.

Would it be a tick or like....pst,pst,pst,pst,psssssst???

Ever hear an exhaust system cool down after just being shut off? Sometimes they sound like that also. It can be very decieving at times.

Oh ya, once i get the new one on, i'm going to put a few skin thermocouples aroudn the location that it cracked and get some field data temps

yes.. a cracked exhaust manifold would tick.. just like a exhaust mani gasket goin out will tick.

It is a very loud and distinct ticking. <----experienced it

what would cause it to tick, could it be the engine sound that is usually contained in it being released?
did you notice a smell in the engine bay/loss in boost or any other engine problem or did you take it in simply bc it was louder at low rpms?
I'm just asking because I have a very loud tick all the time thats very annoying and if that could be to blame then I want to get it looked at

What is happening right by the manifold that might sound like ticking if it wasn't sealed(killit)

Some other sources of tick/snap sounds might be:

a.) spark arcing from cracked spark plug wire insulation (sometimes goes away with varying RPM's)

b.) plugged or bad fuel injector

c.) loose or split heat shield

Well I know I got my Mani replaced after trhee visites to the Dealership. Exhaust leak at Cyl #1. Ya they say that the Threading to hold the Mani was stripped and loose. So they re-tapped it and used Locktite and shit so It seems to be working so far.

But I think its starting to leak slowly again. The Dealership told me that if it leaks again then they will have to replace the top part of my Engine.?

So if they have to do that, then Ill get them to replace internals since there in there already.LOL

the top of the motor would be the cylinder head.

Same thing happenned to me, the manifold cracked and a bolt on the manifold just disappeared.... I'm waiting to get my new manifold and for the moment I'm driving the car and I can smell the exhaust in the car while I'm driving...!!!!

Mine is cracked and causing a ticking. I have 2 nice cracks in the gaps between cylinders 1-3 where they meet at the collector. Looks like a lot of people are having their manifold crack in that area. I hope it holds together until tax return time....

Sorry to bump an old thread. But does anyone know if this type of ticking would go away after the car was warmed up? thx.

sometimes, yes. when metal is heated it expands.

you have to understand the operating temps these cast, restrictive manifolds run at, in the thousands of degrees on most turbo cars, so failure is quite common as the cars get older. volvo, mitsu, my car, srt, evo, sti, SR20det... all of them eventually will crack and go bye bye. hell my mani is already cracked, but not yet all the way through.
