my 93 protege lx recently is experiencing way excessive Crankcase pressure and has white frothy stuff under the oil cap and valve cover..

seems like a blown head gasket but could be a cracked or warped head..

just trying to get an idea how much a used but good Head, or engine maybe a swap to a DOHC would be a good idea..

i bought the car with a tranny rebuild and a new rad.. i can see why it had a new rad, prolly blew and engine overheated and now 11,000km later this head problem happened..

white frothy stuff can be considered normal depending on what type of driving and what climate you are in. For example I challange you to take an oil cap off of a 2.0 vw. Every one that is driven short distances everyday and not really gotten warm will have it.

its not normal for a first gen protege ;) for the price of a used/remanufactured head you could probably get an entire engine at a jy

no its not normal!!

when u open the oil cap or take off the pcv valve when the car;s been driven a bunch of smoking keeps coming out.. but then disappears.. its definetely coolant

also when u take off the cap its really loud.. and u put it back on it quiets.. (duh!) but comparing to doing that b4 its a big difference

also when u take the valve out it is spitting oil excessive p.c. pressure definetely

all signs point to a blown head gasket but im worried that it could be a cracked/warped head

coolant looks fine theres no oil in there.. but for sure eitehr coolant or exhaust gases in the engine

upon startup i see a lil bit of green/but watered down liquid spitting from the tailpipe.. it doesnt do it when its warm.

misses before the car is warmed up.. and also misses, starts weird often.. then gets better..

engine rebuild?? head gasket only?? head?? scrap the car?

Might be parting it out post here if u have interest

following parts have very little milegae up to 10,000miles on them

-radiator
-inner cv joint
-catalytic converter
-front and rear engine mount (not head/transmission)
-fuel pressure regulator
-muffler
-waterpump&timing belt
-crank pulley

bah, dont rebuild the SOHC.

Buy a decent condition DOHC, rebuild that if you want to, drop in and enjoy.

The DOHC will run on your SOHC tranny to save money, but if you plan to make power down the road, might as well swap to a DOHC tranny. (In which case you will need, axles, ecu, and speedo cable.)

You can run the DOHC off of the SOHC ECU, but it isnt reccomended. Find an LX or EGT ecu and use that, and add the wires for VICS. (all info on clubprotege.com)

My car is fine! it was not the headgasket!

Put in a bottle of Lucas oil stabilizer stuff and lifters dont tap engine sounds better and actually vibrates a bit less.. no smoke, or white residue anymore

what happened is that i left the car in garage for 12 days with a half tank of gas, with fuel cleaner in the tank.. then i came back and drove the car 3-4 times pretty short distances 5-10 miles..

that caused the white stuff.. which is not there.. i drove 90miles in a row today to make sure and nothing:)

now the only problem i have is the vibration when engine is under load.. at 750-850 rpm.. which gets worse if i flick on the a/c I have read that its common in early 90s japanese automatics but there must be a fix.. one thing i shall try first is new baterry clamps and re-crimp the ground wires..
also is this a sign of anything 3 cylinders are at 130psi which is 9 above minimum.. 1 cylinder is at 150..

Don't bother.

I have a vacuum leak in my throttle body gasket which is bad enough that when i sprayed carb cleaner on it today my engine idled higher for a bit..
leak is fairly evident as some oil is spewing from there..

All i need to do is to take off my TB and clean it well replace that gasket and i think that should make most of the rough idle go away.

I shold also change my tranny mount.

if it doesnt than I condemn Sohc Automatic 1st Gens with over 200k 4ever!

other than that the car runs good just have a lady in the passenger seat to make a positive light of the vibration.
